The Office of the Prime Minister yesterday failed to name the Brazilian company which Dr Gonzi mentioned as one of his Government’s many achievements during Xarabank’s TV debate on Friday night.

During a debate organised by The Times in February, the Prime Minister had said a Brazilian company was about to invest in Malta, though no further details had ever been given.

Labour leader Joseph Muscat raised this point early during the Xarabank debate as one of Dr Gonzi’s many broken promises.

However, Dr Gonzi immediately hit back, and said the company had in fact opened shop a while ago and was already employing people. The quick rebuttal scored Dr Gonzi points, while dampening Dr Muscat’s enthusiasm.

But when The Sunday Times asked the Office of the Prime Minister for details about the company, only a brief reply was forthcoming.

“The company is a Brazilian international company. In the wake of Libya’s unrest, the company decided to relocate its offices to Malta. The company co-ordinates major construction projects in North Africa,” a spokesman said.

Meanwhile, The Sunday Times is also informed that the Prime Minister failed to answer two parliamentary questions made months ago by Labour MPs Gino Cauchi and Carmelo Abela on the same subject.
