Melita coach Martin Gregory handed in his resignation after the team’s 5-0 defeat to Mosta on Friday, a club spokesman has told The Sunday Times.

The Melita committee are expected to meet tomorrow evening to discuss Gregory’s position but the early indications are that the former Malta midfielder’s resignation will be accepted.

“I can confirm that I handed in my resignation as Melita coach,” Gregory told The Sunday Times yesterday.

“The last few weeks have been very difficult for me and now I plan to take a break for the game.”

Gregory led Melita to the Division One title and promotion to the Premier League last season but the Amateurs have found the going tough in the top flight so far.

Melita, second from bottom with four points from 10 games, have conceded nine goals in their last two matches as they slipped to back-to-back defeats to Sliema Wanderers (0-4) and Mosta.

It remains to be seen whether Gregory’s potential departure would affect the position of Carmel Busuttil who was appointed Melita’s assistant coach at the start of the season.
