Total tax revenues in 2011 amounted to €2,192.7 million, with a tax burden of 33.7 per cent, the National Statistics Office said.

It said in a statement that total tax revenues last year went up by €136.5 million over the previous year.

Indirect and direct taxes and social security contributions all recorded an increase.

The largest increase - of €65.3 million, was registered in indirect taxes, which are linked to production and imports.

Direct taxes, which are current taxes on income and wealth plus capital taxes and other current taxes, went up by €41.7 million, while social security contributions went up by €29.5 million.

In 2001, the tax burden for Malta was 33.7 per cent.
