More than 24 million pages of information crammed into some 130,000 files belonging to the Land Department are being scanned and uploaded onto an online database.

The €900,000 project was called the “largest ever of its kind” by Land Minister Jason Azzopardi, who said the system would cut bureaucracy considerably.

Every document related to government property, from floor plans to contracts, is being added to the database.

Government officials are being trained to ensure a seamless transition.

Dr Azzopardi said an automated system to collect rental arrears would soon be operational. Government property rentals are already being managed by the online database, he added.
