The Institute for Sustainable Development is organising its first national conference titled “Sustainable mobility in Malta: transport research in practice” at SmartCity Malta in Ricasoli on November 30.

Malta’s high levels of private car ownership, a growing cruise liner industry, a geo-strategic freight hub and a growing air transport sector supporting increasing tourism travel are putting substantial strain on the islands’ sustainability. Congestion on the roads is inhibiting movement and affecting economic growth, air pollution is affecting the air quality, tourism product and public health.

Better infrastructure is needed to support growing industries. Although a considerable body of literature exists in the areas of land, air and sea transport in and around urban areas, there is very little that deals with such concerns in small islands.

Local and non-Maltese speakers and young researchers will present their work at the event, which aims to highlight research in this important field and stimulate collaboration among key stakeholders. SmartCity is the main sponsor of the event and is also supporting logistics in its bid to encourage the sustainability debate on the islands and increase awareness towards a greener culture.

“This conference shares our vision and commitment to promote a sustainable way of life. In this respect we lead by example,” SmartCity Malta chief executive officer Fareed Abdulrahman said.

“The SmartCity development was designed to incorporate sustainable and green building principles. The roads in Smart City work sufficiently to cater for the traffic demand within the vicinity. All these initiatives, with the attainment of the LEED certification, have made the SCM01 building a showcase of Smart City Malta’s green vision and commitment towards the environment.”
