Zewwieqa Waterfront takes shape
Work on the regeneration of the Zewwieqa promenade in Mgarr Harbour, Gozo, is well under way, the Gozo Ministry said today.
The work involves the paving of a square near the restaurants, the building of a new paved promenade, visitor facilities and a car park for 70 cars.
The EU is covering 85% of the €5m cost.
The ministry said the project covers an area of 18,000 square metres, with a 700-metre stretch along the coast.
Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said the Zewwieqa Waterfront will complement earlier work on the passenger terminal in Mgarr harbour.
The project has reserved space where the only surviving Latini boat will be displayed.
Remaining works include new sanitary facilities, completion of surfacing works in the car park, building of rubble walls, installation of lighting and street furniture, and paving of some areas.

I always enjoyed the walk between Mgarr and Hondoq...But now, with the new covered parking, it has become very difficult to start the walk on the Mgarr side;you need to climb some new concrete walls. Is it planned to reinstall a new path in front or behind the parking space,so that it would be again possible to enjoy the magnificent views onto Comino and the Channel ?

This is hideous, i hope the concrete structure which is an eyesore in the surroundings will be covered and landscaped to suit the surroundings.

I expect to see another 70 hire cars and tour jeeps using this parking, just like the ferry terminal. The parking should not be monopolised for the Vehicle Leasing firms to the detriment of the gozo commuters, another political inertia in sorting this problem out, but I do not expect this current administration to give a fig about the common commuters.

Zewwieqa? what Zewwieqa? Zewwieqa is ruined and finished.
"The work involves the paving etc..."
And what about the little swimming area we used to call Zewwieqa. Where is it now? Can we go swimming there?
I am sure that the Hon. Minister knows well what I am saying. I am sure that she as a young teenager used to enjoy swimming there, as many from Nadur, Qala and Ghajnsielem did.

The Zewwieqa swimming area has been lost along the time not because of this project. The area you are refering to i9s actually in the harbour and with today's marine traffic I could hardly see anyone thinking of having a bath in that sort of water, heavily contaminated by the vessels.
It has been sacrificed in the name of progress.

Yet more money from the EU, where would 85% of this cost have come from without membership?
Mr Peter Korsten
Oct 31st 2012, 19:13
Perhaps from the money that we're now paying to the EU? I live the EU, and I think that membership is good for Malta, but when it's declared that the EU pays 85%, it never states how much money from Malta goes to the EU in the first place.

@ Peter Korsten
Malta's membership of the EU will only be good if Malta is getting more than it contributes. Everywhere we see construction / refurbishment, etc, taking place, the information boards always seem to indicate that the EU contribution is 85%. Seems a good deal to me !
Is Malta a NET contributor ( putting in more money than it receives in return ) like the UK, Germany ?

@ P Korsten
EU countries which contribute to the EU more than they receive are well-to-do countries whose economies do even better than Malta's. Do their citizens complain?
You, like many in Malta prefer to always be on the receiving end but never in a position to contribute.
Cannot wait for the day when Malta is so well off that it becomes a net contributor not begging hat in hand for aid.

This is another project that I am sure will make Gozo more accessible. But I think that again this was given the wrong priority. This stretch leads to nowhere Very few people will stroll that way. Mostly in the summer. On the other hand there are no pavements at all at Xlendi going up the hill and Marsalforn bay leading to the Qbajjar where many people uses these stretches all year round.

I agree with you 100 percent, there are too many other major works that need to be addressed. Wouldn't it be nicer if we concentrate more on resurfacing works thus reducing frustration and give a better quality for road users once and for all

Nothing against such projects, anzi proset, but why do they take endless years to finish.
For a few summers, the yachting community have been dragging themselves through inches of dust to reach the the pontoons for their daily necessities.
Just check the photos of a normal working day. How many workers are there on the job? Bahh.
Works well under way. Good. Can you give us a date!

I do not think that only one Latini Boat survived,...there is one at the Sliema Ferries which has been altered to take turists around,...there may be others, but not sure.
