Man steals from father's scrapyard
Joseph Bonnett, 34, from Marsascala was jailed for three years today after admitting to stealing radiators from his father's scrapyard in Birzebbuga.
In its judgement, the court noted that he had a number of previous convictions and had stolen from his father's property.
Bonnett was arraigned along with Paul Camilleri, 32, unemployed from Cospicua.
Testifying, Police Inspector at around 11.45pm on October 29 a report was received about two men who were in a scrap yard in Ghar Dalam, Birzebbuga.
The police found Mr Bonett's car abandoned on site. The stolen radiators were inside. Bonett and Camilleri were later found in Zejtun.
The inspector said that this was a "classic" case of two men with a drug addiction who needed money to sustain the habit, adding that in Mr Bonnett's case this was the eighth time this has happened and the victim was his father.
Legal aid lawyer, Joseph Ellis said Mr Bonnett went to take what he claimed was owed to him from his father and not from a stranger.
Magistrate Farrugia, conditionally discharged Mr Camilleri since this was his first offence, while Mr Bonett was jailed for three years.

Shouldn't scrap yards be surrounded by a wall and a gate for an entrance?
It happened to me a couple of times that I follow a countryside lane and ended up in a scrapyard... which in one occasion ended up with the land owner being aggressive because I ''Trespassed'' his land.
Adding to this, what's the story with countryside lanes being marked as private? is it legal if there is no gate?

I agree with Mr. Grech. You just wouldn't know where you stand with the law.

This is a good comment. I have the same question. Especially behind the Santa Maria estates/selmun.. there are areas marked private... but I suspect it isn't actually private...
