GWU defending bus drivers
The GWU said today that it was backing and defending Arriva drivers who were suspended last week as soon as they returned to the terminus after calling at the union offices to ask about shortfalls in their salaries.
The union said it was following the disciplinary hearings and advising all the drivers who sought its assistance.
The union said it would also assist drivers who needed to appeal from the Disciplinary Board decisions.

Surely the protesting drivers should have gone through the dispute procedure with the company not just walk off the job. What about the fare paying passenger ? Left waiting for non existent buses at the bus station. Drivers, don`t bite the hand that feeds you. Rant over.

How can such a union gain respect from an employer? If an employee leaves his job for a reason, without prior authorization, he should be disciplined. Why should GWU defend such actions? These people messed up an entire bus schedule. Couldn't they just use their mobile to call the union. I am sure that the union would have taken action.

Do you actually understand english?
The article says that they were suspended last week. They did not leave but were suspended in light of the accidents that had happened.
If the case of the accident was caused by tyres then the Union acted well in defending employees!

@ l Bugeja Mr Bugeja i think you are mistaken and actually don't follow up on the news, the drivers initially left there work station and went to the GWU to complain about the shortages in their wage packet. and not because of the so called tyres that is also suggested causes accidents as you claim. in fact the GWU told them that they will not support them but 2 days later changed their minds reason?

is this the same union that 2 days ago told these bus drivers that they will not support them and to take the matter up with Arriva account department?? One asks why the sudden change in heart? is it because another union made public that it would support them but not getting any recognition from Arriva Management? Maybe the GWU thought it best to support them or they would loose their members

By defending any wrong-doing,one will only be encouraging others to follow suit.

i was on a bus today coming from gozo and every time the bus went on low gears ,tires would not grip because of rain and not the right tires . arriva knows about this but safety in malta for arriva is not an issue

I think the drivers returned to the terminus over a pay dispute, not regarding having the wrong tyres. Safety in Malta is not an issue for a majority of employers not only Arriva.

Backing those drivers who done wrong, those who were suppose to be on duty and just thought about themselves and leaving people stranded! That s not right is it? As that question to a 5 year old!

A union always defends its members. Like a layer always defends his/her client even if they commit murder.

When the GWU really digs its heels in we will see another Drydocks fiasco and everyone will suffer.
