A bartender who stole €10,000 worth of gold jewellery from her ex-boyfriend’s mother was yesterday given a suspended jail term and ordered to pay it back.

Ioana Ciocan, 20, from Swieqi, would be jailed if payment was not settled within six months, Magistrate Doreen Clarke warned after handing down a two-year jail term suspended for four years.

Legal aid lawyer Noel Bartolo said that it had been agreed with parte civile lawyer Ray Zammit that the value of the items was €10,000.

Dr Zammit said the value was higher but his client was willing to settle for that amount.
