Hurricane Sandy in pictures
Huge swathes of New York have been left deserted and dark after America's largest city suffered the full force of Superstorm Sandy.
As the storm hit land and moved slowly inwards, millions along the US East Coast awoke without power or transport.
A pictorial record of the hurricane can be seen in the photos above, provided by the Press Association.

Saw this post and thought it was from Malta, New York. I'm in Ottawa, Canada but doing some work with a company in Malta, New York. We had some of the winds and rain from the storm, but it wasn't too bad (at least so far). These hurricanes happen every year, some worse than others. Not much to do with global warming, just location and time of year. check hurricane Hazel 1954.

Hurricanes arent the result of warmer oceans or man-made global warming. Hurricanes are the result of the temperature difference between ocean waters and atmosphere. Sandy was resulted due to cooler atmospheric temperatures due to an El Niño that did not turn up after a cold La Niña. Forget global warming. The world has not seen any for the last 16 years and this is official.

So sad when nature shakes a bit there is no escape for no one..............being poor, rich, catholic, islamic.....ect. The only good point I see is that wall street and its trades didn't hurt anyone for these couple of days.

This was only a category 1 hurricane so I am not sure how you guys came to the conclusion that it happened due to global warming. Maybe you guys should research a little more about hurricanes. For example there are 5 categories and the 5 is the strongest. The reason it did so much damage is because it hits the most populated area of the USA.

And also because it occurred during high tide, which caused a storm surge, flooding coastal areas, tunnels and subway tunnels in low lying areas.

It's strange that the amount of water Malta gets on a normal September or October rain storm is similar to a once in a generation super storm that hit America. I was not too impressed with the images because I know that people almost drowned in the middle of marsa and that was just rain water not sea water as well.

It will be interesting to see just how many countries rush to America's aid in a time when they need it. America has and continues to this day to be THE provider for humanitarian aid for food, medicine and of course aid. I wonder which countries that benefited from this aid will now give back to America in this time of need.

Now probably All become to their senses, when a number used to say that the azone layer is not effecting our climate. Scientists long time ago has warned us that ice is melting at a high rate which also causes temperature changes in the sea water by the amount of heavy waters going into them. One effects the other like a chain. We are experiencing a chain reaction.in our climate around the globe.

The culprit is not the ozone layer but carbon dioxide which is produced whenever fossil fuels are burnt. In fact, there are countries that are trying carbon sequestration as a tool to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and to capture it where it is produced.

Hurricanes in this corner of the globe happen every year around this time, when the weather changes - check the weather patterns that have been recorded for the past 100+ years. They start in the warm waters of the Caribbean and move north.

Why is it that we can split the atom and land on the moon but still have the weather forecaster get it wrong ?

It does make you think doesn't it? Mother Nature's deadliest weapon is water and the gun that shoots it is wind. There is no technology or infrastructure that can stop this force, ever.

The real reason is because the weather is a complex dynamical system in which a small external stimulus can cause very considerable effects.

Lots of small variables affect the weather. It's not as simple as one might think.

Where do you get the information that the forecasters got it wrong? This storm was tracked very early on, updates were given constantly and everyone knew more or less the track it was taking. Evacuation orders were given with ample time to make plans, shelters were set up throughout and emergency personnel and the National Guard were prepared.
