New Barrakka lift may feature reminder of old

One small reminder of the old Barrakka lift may yet feature in the new lift, currently under construction.

A signboard to the old lift, believed to have been installed just after the war near the Customs House, is being restored by Heritage Malta at its restoration centre in Bighi.

The sign, which people could see during the Bighi open day on Sunday, reads Barrakka Lifts The quickest way to the city.

It suffered weathering and years of grime until it was removed some years after the old lift was itself dismantled in 1983.

The new lift is due to be completed by the end of this year. The work is currently focused on the bridge from the lift shaft to the Upper Barrakka and installation of equipment.

Having read some of the politically biased comments from this timeline I now hope that these people will swallow their words ( hopefully choke on them as well ) and admit once and for all that this is and will have been a good investment for our capital city and cruise liner port.
I won't hold my breath though because for PL supporters every single thing done by this government is bad.

What the PL destroys, the NP rebuilds.

William,I was operated upon in Bighi in 1961 during my RAF years. HMS Bighi had the best looking WRENS nurses in Malta.

Mr Farrugia people like my husband who are avid collectors have indeed kept details of the old lift, in fact we even have a token used on the lift. Unfortunately there is no such place as a Museum in Malta where these can be displayed. We really need such a place to show the collections of items that were used by the normal folks, in thier every day life.
