A 20-year-old bartender from Swieqi has been jailed two years suspended for four after she admitted to stealing €10,000 worth of jewellery from her former boyfriend’s mother.

Ioana Ciocan was also ordered to pay back the money within six months.

Legal aid lawyer Noel Bartolo said that it had been agreed with parte civile lawyer Ray Zammit to set the value of the amount stolen at €10,000.

Dr Zammit said that the value was actually far higher but both sides agreed upon that sum.

Dr Bartolo proposed a suspended jail term which would come into force only if the amount stolen was not repaid.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke warned Ms Ciocan that if she did not pay the money she risked being jailed and told her that she also had the suspended jail term hanging over her head.
