PN to seek 'reasonable' timelines for deputy leader election

The process for the election of the deputy leader of the Nationalist Party can take a maximum of two months, but the party will seek to establish more reasonable timelines, PN General Secretary Paul Borg Olivier said today.

The PN Executive kicks off the process this evening by taking decisions on the appointment of an electoral commission and setting the timelines for the call for nominations and other stages of the process.

The post became vacant when Tonio Borg resigned on being nominated to serve as European Commissioner to succeed John Dalli.

Dr Borg Olivier spoke to Matthew Xuereb.

I am trying to make sense of what you wrote, GL Calleja.

RCC and Dalli are not 'the govt'. AG and FD will not contest, as no doubt several Labour MPs will not and CMB is very much in. Tonio Borg will be out if appointed EU Commiss. but a by-election will elect another Nationalist MP.

It is rather the PL who takes one step forward but takes 30 back to the 80s. AST, JDG, LB, ML-CP, KV et al.

OK I will try make it simple for you. CMB is no longer a Minister. Tonio Borg will no longer be a Minister, that is two and like I said, if Franco Debono, has his way with Austin Gatt the PN will be missing 3 Ministers. The other two I just threw in there just to confuse you. Mr Martinelli like everybody else, you understand very well what I am talking about.

Your arguments are full of holes. Why should a Christmas budget disrupt commerce and people's lives? I am sure washing machines all over the country are waiting for the budget to drop dead.

If the PN is doing "anything to stretch its remaining days" then surely this must give it more time to implement the important laws you are mentioning rather than less?

@Balzan.

You are right there is always a pause in shopping with every budget, shops are well aware of it.

Gorg,

The PN cannot implement any new law currently because it lost its majority in parliament, they cannot even implement the budget because they are afraid that it may not pass so really they are just wasting eveyones time like they have been doing for the last year

you should have said that in 1982 when lejber manages a whole 5 years without a majority. What counts is what we voted for not what your wishful thinking.

@ Kevin Camilleri

You forget that presenting a Budget will show the public what it would be missing should it or the government be shot down and not reelected. This is exactly what Joseph is fearing and stirs the pot in order not to let a Budget see the light of day.

The PL would be credible if it presents its plans which make sense and are better than the govt's. But it has none. Just talk.

Hossam Helwani. When will you realize that mentioning events which occured 32 years ago do not impress anybody today ? Can't you see that GonziPN keeps sliding down despite all the references to 30 and 40 years ago ?

J. Martinelli: Anybody can make a nice looking budget when one knows that he will not be called upon to implement what he promises in the budget, since he is certain to lose the election !
