Cavani: Serie A title chasers Napoli could be without their main goalscorer, Edinson Cavani, for the visit of Chievo tonight after the Uruguayan international pulled up in training, media reported yesterday. Cavani, who has scored six goals in eight league games this season, is set to undergo a fitness test early today.

Benfica: Portuguese Premier League club Benfica have re-elected Luis Filipe Vieira as their president after he pledged to move the broadcasting of league matches to the club’s television channel, Benfica TV, and lower match ticket prices. Vieira, 63, grabbed 83 per cent of the votes from Benfica registered supporters on Friday to beat runner-up Rui Rangel, a Lisbon judge. He is a real estate sector businessman and heads into his fourth term in charge since taking over the Lisbon club in 2003.

Hong Kong: Scot Ernie Merrick has resigned as head coach of Hong Kong after less than a year in the job, with a football official saying that the relationship “clearly wasn’t working”. Merrick, 59, a former Australian A-League coach, quit the more than HK$2 million ($260,000) a year post after falling foul of internal HKFA politics, the South China Morning Post reported yesterday.

Metsu: Former Senegal and United Arab Emirates coach Bruno Metsu has stepped down as manager of Dubai-based club Al Wasl after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. The Frenchman replaced Diego Maradona as coach of the Emirates side in July with a year still left on the former Argentina World Cup winner’s contract. The 58-year-old Metsu has been relieved of his duties after Al Wasl’s board accepted his request to leave.

Kadlec: Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed defender Michal Kadlec will be out for several weeks with a knee ligament tear. The Czech Republic international suffered the injury to his left knee in last night’s Europa League win over Rapid Vienna and scans revealed the extent of the damage. Leverkusen travel to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich today.
