It all started last November when teacher and broadcaster George Cremona, purely by chance, came across Trevor Zahra’s book Il-Ktieb tal-Fenek l-Aħmar, which was written in 1986.

Having taken a fancy to the book’s protagonist, the rabbit, Cremona started collaborating with Zahra to create a unique production, based on Zahra’s book, that combines the roles of teaching and educating with that of cultural entertainment.

The production will bring together music, theatre and the performing arts under the direction of veteran actress Josette Ciappara, with Renato Dimech taking on the role of the Rabbit, and Thea Farrugia and Craig Roy Vella as his human sidekicks.

Throughout the event, the Rabbit will be inviting popular Maltese singers as his guests to perform a number of hits that have touched the hearts of generations of Maltese. The audience will be playing an active role through sing-alongs and other surprises that the Rabbit has in store.

Among the singers taking part are Augusto Cardinali, David Azzopardi, Debbie Scerri, Eleanor Cassar, Enzo Gusman, Fr Karm Debattista, Freddie Portelli, Ira Losco, JAnvil, Jade Vella, Mary Rose Mallia, Mike Spiteri, Nadine Axisa, Philip Vella, The Greenfields and Vince Fabri. Choreography is under the direction of Jade Schembri, while two children’s choirs will also be taking part under the direction of Simone Attard.

All proceeds from the event will go towards Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, and all participating artists are offering their time and services on a voluntary basis. The event also aims to raise more awareness about traditional texts written in the Maltese language, with the audience being introduced to Zahra’s book in an alternative manner.

Il-Ktieb tal-Fenek l-Aħmar will take place next Sunday at the Catholic Institute in Floriana. Tickets are available from the booking office or online.
