The Żurrieq Wolves Athletics Club, in conjunction with the Żurrieq Local Council, will host the 15th edition of the International Half Marathon on November 4.

This race has established itself as one of the main long-distance running events in the local athletics calendar, also attracting a considerable number of foreigners.

Starting from the village’s main square, runners make their way to Safi, Mqabba, Siġġiewi and then back to Żurrieq via Blue Grotto Avenue, enjoying the spectacular seascapes of the south of the island.

There will be trophies and a cash prize for the first three in both male and female categories.

The organisers will also distribute mementoes to the leading runners in the various age categories, including one for over-60 runners.

Jonathan Balzan won the men’s race last year in 1:13.41. The first woman home was Carmen Hili in 1:27.35.

Christian Nemeth, of Belgium, holds the record for the distance after clocking 1:09.36 in 2006. Carol Walsh was the fastest woman ever at the Żurrieq half when breasting the tape at 1:20.37 in 2004.

Registrations for the half-marathon are now open. One may obtain more details by phoning 9968-6996 or by sending an e-mail to zurrieqwolvesathletics@gmail.com.
