Labour whip Joe Mizzi was yesterday ordered to pay €2,500 in libel damages to ex-Water Service Corporation chairman Michael Falzon.

The case revolved around an article, penned by Mr Mizzi, published in The Times on April 1, 2004, entitled Playing Chairman, in which he insinuated Mr Falzon had tried to hide and manipulate information on drinking water quality in view of EU membership.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti ruled even the opinion piece’s title gave the impression to the reader that the chairman was a puppet.
