I fully agree with what former European Commissioner John Dalli’s said, as was reported by The Times (October 18), that his forced resignation from the European Commission “was a systematic plan of entrapment”.

Anyone who has read about the way multinational companies work to influence EU decisions likely to have a serious impact on their business will most probably come to the same conclusion that Dalli has drawn .

I would suggest to Dalli, and also to all those who would wish to become more aware of the hidden hands who wield much power in Brussels, to read Bernard Connolly’s book The Rotten Heart of Europe, published in 1995.

Connolly was the head of the European Commission’s monetary affairs department. He had been sacked for revealing incredible facts, not stories, of what was going on in the Commission.

Another very important top official who suffered the same fate was Marta Andreasen, who used to be the chief accountant of the European Commission.

She used to criticise harshly the accounting system, deeming it as being open to fraud. After many clashes with various top officials and even commissioners, she had refused to sign off the Commission’s accounts. She was finally suspended and later lost her job.

In 2009, Andreasen wrote a very revealing book, Brussels Laid Bare, which gave a very detailed account of her unbearable experiences, due to her unflinching determination not to submit to superior orders to accommodate the Commission by signing off the accounts.

Her standards seemed to be way above those that the Commission preferred to have.

Finally, I wish Dalli a successful conclusion to his efforts to clear not just his own name but also that of Malta.

I believe he can do it.
