Irrespective of the final outcome of the John Dalli saga, why did our former European Commissioner resign if totally innocent? (There is never any smoke without fire.)

The fact that European Commission president, Josè Manuel Barrosso, as reported, apparently “forced him to resign” merely shows how undemocratic and authoritarian the unelected elitist EU hierarchy are. Who are they actually responsible or accountable to?

The upshot of all this is that Dalli will be condemned as being the first individual European Commissioner to resign whether he jumped or was pushed.

So what happens now? Mr Dalli will probably contest the next election and promote his ticket by trying to attract a vote of sympathy à la Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando and Mistragate and will assuredly get back into the readily forgiving fold as the majority have short and highly selective memories. Irrespective of actual events, his supporters will believe what they wish to believe and will paint him as the victim.

It is written that “truth will out” but in matters political that is wishful thinking and only Dalli and ex-Sliema councillor and circus promoter Silvio Zammit (what were the “personal reasons” prompting his resignation from the council?) truly know what went on.

The unpalatable likelihood is that this will remain the case for all time, despite the obvious conjecture and assumption of what people think actually occurred and where the finger of suspicion actually points. How can any happy ending be provided in this case?

As it is highly unlikely that Dalli will be exonerated and cannot now be reinstated, this will taint and tarnish Maltese politics in the eyes of the rest of Europe.
