Updated - Green light for Fleur-de-Lys arch rebuilding
Updated - Adds photomontage. Mepa has given the green light for the rebuilding of the historic arch at Fleur-de-Lys.
The application for the development permit was filed by the administrative committee of Fleur-de-Lys, which is part of Birkirkara local council.
The committee is planning to build a replica of the arch on the roundabout between St Joseph High Road and the Rabat road, on the original site.
The arch - also known as Wignacourt Arch - was actually a large arch and two smaller ones which linked the aqueduct in Mrieħel and Sta Venera. It was demolished after having been damaged by a Royal Air Force crane in an accident in 1943.
The arch was adorned by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt's escutcheon and by three carved fleur-de-Lys at the top, which gave the name to this locality.
The new arch will be built to the same dimensions of the old one, on the existing roundabout, so as not to hinder the heavy traffic flow.
Two plaques from the original arch, relocated recently, will be included in the new structure.
An impression of how the new arch will look.

Really Prosit!
It would be a most pleasant sight to see the old arch in place.
There are other historic monuments, like the Birgu clocktower, that can be reconstructed. Another one is the St Elmo lighthouse.

It has been the dream of many karkarizi and now furdulizi who also dream of their own local council and being set up as a town by themselves.
This Arch has always been discarded because of traffic excuse. My point is that there are many important stones especially obelisks and coat of arms in private houses. These should be returned since they should have never be where they are now, at once.

Why do we still find it hard to create something of our own? More than forty years as an independent and we still cry for (great) buildings and structures that never belong to the Maltese; they belong to civilisations that left their mark on the island through the island's history. When are we going to give space and ample resource (ie social state) for a contemporary culture to ignite?

At the other end of Fleur de Lys road, near the old red buses terminal, there was a milestone which was removed when Psaila Street was about to be re-built. This was placed very near to where the Fantasy Tours office now lies. Unfortunately such a historic, national item was never put back to its original place on the pavement. Another public item gone private, perhaps?

Seems there are a lot of experts here! What a farce! ...and some complain we don't have a carnival city. There you go.

Excellent news. It is good to rebuilt some of the historic buildings built by the knights and destroyed by the English or German war planes.
The Birgu clock tower should also be re-built to make the square look more to the original set up.

Sometime ago I was talking to someone who knows that the original stones still exist and they are numbered. Could this be true?
I Abela
Oct 23rd 2012, 18:47
It is very true. The arch was dismantled not demolished. The stones were numbered and stored somewhere. Eventually the place were the stones were stored (including the stones) fell in the hands of a private individual, I don't know exactly if through inheritance, purchase of the property, etc. Whatever was the fate of these stones thereafter remains a mystery.

ZBALL....., dak huwa "l-Ark tal-Akwidott", jew "l-Ark ta' Wignacourt". Dak kien parti mill-akwadott u l-uzu tieghu kien sempliciment biex jaqsam l-ilma min naha ghall-ohra tat-triq.... Ghalkemm spiss insibuh miktub hekk, izda dan hu zball kbir. Barra minn hekk, dak jinsab fit-territorju ta' Santa Venera. Dak iz-zmien Fleur-De-Lys ma kienx jezisti. Filfatt, kienet propju l-arma tal-Gran Mastru ...

Correct me if I am wrong, but since I don't think the original stone blocks are still available, what's the use of this arch?
It's like having a photocopy of the Monalisa i.e. a fake!
It is a massive pity that the original one was knocked down, but what is going to be achieved by re-building it?

They are going to rebuild something beautiful.
Compare and contrast with the parliament that is being built next to city gate.
It is original - and a total eye sore.

Altru li kien jeżisti dak l-isem. Kull min kien joqgħod il-Ħamrun, Santa Venera u Birkirkara hekk kien isibu, u hekk kienet, u baqgħet, issejjaħlu l-bqija ta' Malta.
Popolarment kien jissejjaħ il-Furdulis.

Very encouraging to see this heritage monument being redone. Well done to the councils involved. Hopefully it will be erected by recycled stone so the "vintage" look will be preserved.

Why not do the same with the old city gate? it could be reconstructed where the independence monument is now. We could have our own arch de triomph as we're going into Valletta. The independence monument can be relocated elsewhere in an equally prominent place.

Wouldn't it be better for public funds to go, say to healthcare (e.g. to pay for that little girls operation) instead of a replica on a roundabout?
Antoine Attard

Our heritage deserves much more respect. You jump into conclusions Mr Agius. BoV has a substantial Bank Guarantee with Mepa in the Developement Permit of the BoV Centre which is still unutilised. It is precisely tied to the building of the Arch! That was 12 years ago.

Mr George Debattista (ex B'Kara mayor) proposed the rebuilding of Fleur-De-Lys Arch when he was major of B'Kara. He did a lot of work on this project, collected information on the services passing through the round about. He also meet personnel from departments concerned.

Great news! Finally we are getting something beautiful to remind us of days when life was slower and simpler. Now I would like to appeal to Birkirkara council to look after the only Malta railway carriage left. This was restored and set right in front of the council chambers - Birchircara Station. Vandalised again many times and now almost in state of disrepair. Please save our carriage.

So It's ok to rebuild a Baroque Aqueduct Archway for an aqueduct that has in part disappeared with the rising of streets, but for our beloved Valletta, we needed to have a LEGO design by Renzo Piano for an entrance. Can we have some consistency in this country?

Not only you are right, but notice closely at the newly parlament buildings, now we will have new gatherings of pigeons resting on the newly created "shelves". On second thought, the pigeons may have a better use for the new buildings.

Was it an accident? Or was the RAF crane intentionally driven into the arch when it was obvious that it could not pass under it? Military vehicles used that road on their way to Ta' Qali.
At the time of the accident I was at Bugeja Hopsital (today's Centru Ħidma Soċjali) and when I heard the noise I ran to Fleur-de-Lys Junction. My impression is that the crane could never have gone through.
