Greater Flamingos land in Salina
These four Greater Flamingos landed in the salt pans at Salina this afternoon.
BirdLife Malta said it immediately alerted the police and is preparing a night watch to guard these protected birds and prevent them from suffering the same fate as the two injured juvenile flamingos that sought refuge in the salt pans earlier this month.

What a country? These beautiful birds need to have police around them in order not to be shot!
That says a lot about the mentality of some of us.

Would be interesting to know how many of them are still alive. I heard that shots rang out until 2 o clock this morning!

It is better to watch over them than publicise them. Some hunters will fire at any protected bird to stuff and put it in a showcase.

Hunting is meant to stay forever all over the world. Malta is not an exception. We are small that's why you hear shots all over the country. You can't judge the present and future governments to seize firearms..I've just bought a 2000eur shotgun last week. I am so frightened that one day the authority could seize and take my shotgun. No way !!

You could have found something better to do with 2000 euro.

Ghandek biex tiftahar! What pleasure do you derive from killing a bird that will provide you with no sustenance? Please explain as in all honesty I fail to understand

you want us to applaude you Mr Camilleri? Go and use your 2000eur shotgun on clay pigeons like civilised people do.

Don't worry politicians will sell their souls for your vote and if all wildlife is killed in the process they don't care as wildlife does not vote. Third world country = third world mentality. You could have bought a camera or as others have suggested you could shot clay pigeons and maybe represent your country in the Olympics one day.

Enjoy these 4 flamingos while hunters will enjoy their 4 trushes.
There's one simple fact that many cannot understand: with or without an open hunting season makes no difference for a poacher (actually most of the times a closed season would sound better)

What beautiful birds, they look like a lovely family! Fingers acrossed, hope they will take off quickly and safely - the longer they linger, the less chance they survive Malta.

What a terrible shame that some people would rather kill these beautiful creatures then admire them alive. Birdlife should campaign with posters and advertisement to put to the forefront of the coming elections the cruelty of this massacre, which a very small minority call Sport. Propose the motion to the general public to vote for the Party that includes in its manifesto an end to this killing.

The only solution is to simply ban hunting/owning guns on these islands. If some low-life cannot control himself not to shoot a protected bird, he probably can't control himself not to abuse his wife and children either, or anyone else who gets in his way. Hard on the honest hunters (are there any?) but, hey guys, get rid of the baddies otherwise you will always be lumped together as pig-poo!
Peter Bonello

i dont like hunters in general but banning hunting or owning guns wont resolve anything. Most illegal hunters dont even have a properly registered gun so they would have it anyway!!

What if a consultative referendum on the abolishment of hunting is held? The issue would then be settled in the clearest & most democratic manner.

This hunting season has been going on for weeks and will go on into at least January. Every morning at precisely 06.30 the massacre starts. Imtahleb and Dingli areas are like a war zone, well a very one sided war at that.
The election is near and neither of the two main parties has had the courage to put a total ban on hunting on their manifesto. It will cost them more votes if they dont !!

Perfectly right and that will be a sight even for tourists who never had seen flamingoes at so close range.

May I remind you that when the Storks were killed by poachers it was close season so it is not a matter to abolish hunting but proper law enforcement.
And btw I never heard anyone trying to abolish hunting in the UK although these things do happen also there :

You're right Mr. Consiglio. Ever since hunting has been clamped down upon (with limited success), the numbers of birds of prey I saw has increased dramatically. I am no bird watcher . I just enjoy drives and walks in what's left of our countryside and happen to see them fly past. Had I been a bird watcher, I'm sure that I would have been able to spot many more.

J Brinkworth: Mr Brinkworth the use of hunting mammals with dogs has been banned in the UK, I hope you understand how many forms of 'sport' this affects?
The irony of the report you highlight is that the majority of those prosecuted for killing Raptors were GAMEKEEPERS to make sure there were lots of game birds for Hunters to kill!

If even one was only injured through shooting I hope that FKNK will be the first to ask for the closing of the hunting season with immediate effect and abolish hunting. Let only trapping take place.
