Barroso agrees to Tonio Borg's nomination

European Commission President Jose Manoel Barroso has given his agreement for the  candidacy of Tonio Borg as Commissioner. He will take over John Dalli's responsibilities for health and customer protection.

The European Commission said this afternoon that Mr  Barroso had a meeting with Dr Borg in Brussels. He then informed the Maltese Prime Minister that Dr Borg's candidacy should proceed.

Dr Borg will now be facing questioning by MEPs.

Dr Borg yesterday resigned his post as deputy leader of the Nationalist Party but will stay on as Foreign Minister and an MP until the confirmation process is complete.

@ C Cassar: Is this the kind of DEMOCRACY you aspire for !!! mamma mia what a bunch of passive people you are. I am not fond of politics but on this I am with Mr Dalli.

This has nothing to do with innocence or guilt. Barroso has clearly stated he no longer desires John Dalli as a commissioner It is exactly the same case as a Prime Minister sacks a minister from his cabinet. What's not to understand? Mr Dalli will be able to defend himself , when and if the AG decides that there was enough evidence. This is a political not a legal move.

Mr Gatt, are you asserting that the EU Commission led by Borroso is as undemocratic as Communist China's Politburo? Just because Dalli & Barroso did not hit it off, would that give the EU President any inconclusive, potentially politically motivated excuse to have a change of a nationally nominated Commissioner?

Good God! What did we get ourselves into!

Mr Pavia, you should read the Treaty of the EU.
