Recently, a great friend of mine, Fr Joe Alessandro, was nominated Coadjutor Bishop of Garissa, Kenya, where the Maltese Capuchins have been running a mission for some time. I have, in the past, undertaken various initiatives to raise money for the mission.

Fr Alessandro, who has the mission at heart, had miraculously survived an attack when, in the course of his duties, he was shot in the leg while driving in Garissa.

Bishop Alessandro (currently staying at the Capuchin convent in Floriana) is preparing to return to Garissa for his new assignment, to help his brother bishop, Mgr Paul Darmanin, OFM Cap. He will be leaving Malta on November 3.

I wish to take this occasion to appeal to readers to contribute money that Bishop Alessandro could take with him to his mission.

This is being done on my own initiative, with the full consent of Bishop Alessandro, whom I have invited home to meet members of my family on Wednesday.

I would be grateful if readers could write cheques to Bishop Joe Alessandro, OFM, Cap and send them to me at 13, Triq in-Narċis, Santa Luċija SLĊ 1101.

Those making a donation should include their full name, address and telephone number. Bishop Alessandro will be sending personal letters to each donor, indicating the amount sent, as a receipt.

The contributions should reach me, whether by post or by hand, by noon the day after tomorrow (Wednesday). In the evening, they will be handed over to Bishop Alessandro, who will then write to the contributors individually.
