Huntelaar: Schalke have said they will only look to lengthen striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s current deal in the Bundesliga’s winter break with last season’s top scorer out of contract next June. “We have decided that we won’t have any contract talks before December and there will be no new developments,” Schalke team manager Horst Heldt said yesterday.

Arrested: A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was hit by a fan during a Championship game. The incident was one of a number of ugly scenes at Hillsborough during the 1-1 draw with Leeds which was televised on Friday night. Gloucestershire Police said the man was arrested in Cheltenham yesterday afternoon.

Nene: Paris SG striker Nene has undergone an operation on a broken bone in his face, the Ligue 1 club announced yesterday, meaning he will miss the midweek Champions League away match to Dynamo Zagreb. The operation went well, PSG added, without saying how long Nene would be out for.

Wilshere: Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere returned to their squad at Norwich City on Saturday but manager Arsene Wenger opted against bringing him off the bench in the 1-0 Premier League defeat. “We have to be conscious he has not played for 14 months,” Wenger said. “He will play on Monday (today) with the reserves and then we will see where we go from there. He needs games.”

Unruly fans: Verona made a public apology yesterday after a small section of their supporters aimed insulting chants at Piermario Morosini during a Serie B match at Livorno on Saturday. Morosini was a Livorno player who collapsed and died during a match in April. Reports said police have already filmed the hooligans responsible for the insults.

Courbis: Frenchman Rolland Courbis is set to sign as coach of Algerian first division club USM Alger. The 59-year-old former defender has had a colourful career spanning 41 years as both a player and coach and most notably had spells at Marseille, Bordeaux, Ajaccio, Montpellier and recently the Niger national team.
