British hit-and-run spree

Two people were in intensive care in a Welsh hospital yesterday after a series of hit-and-run incidents in Cardiff left one woman dead and 13 injured.

Police were questioning a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murder over Friday’s 30-minute rampage, in which a 32-year-old mother, Karina Menzies (pictured), was killed after being hit by a van outside a fire station.

Seven children including a 23-month-old toddler were among the injured, police said, revising the number hurt in the spree from 12 to 13.

Nine people were still being treated in hospital including two adults who were in a critical but stable condition in intensive care.

West Bank vote held

Palestinians voted in local elections in the Israel-occupied West Bank yesterday, their first vote for six years and one with little choice, out of step with democratic revolutions elsewhere in the Arab world.

The results were expected to largely reaffirm the Western-backed, mainly secular Fatah party, which runs a de facto government in the slivers of land not policed by Israel.

London rally

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of London and other British cities yesterday in protest against government spending cuts, with union leaders expected to call for a general strike.

Protesters paused to boo at Cameron’s Downing Street residence, and shouted “Pay your taxes!” at a Starbucks coffee shop.

Kuwaiti polls

The Kuwaiti Cabinet yesterday amended a controversial electoral law and set December 1 as the date for snap polls, acting on orders from the Emir.

The snap polls are the second this year and the fifth since mid-2006 as Parliament has repeatedly been dissolved due to political disputes.
