My friend, the only two entities that can sack a Commissioner (who acts on behalf of the EU and is independent of the nation state) is the President of the Commission or the European Parliament.
So Labour, Christian Democrats, Greens or whoever is at the helm, has no power to sack the Commissioner.

Debono’s political judgement of Borg’s achievement is scathing: “Can someone mention a single major achievement for Tonio Borg in the fifteen years he has been Minister? What has he been doing? Not a single major reform comes to mind: just dullness, incompetence and failures.”

And you find nothing wrong with the fact that Debono manages to criticise in such a disgusting manner each and every Nationalist MP? It's a mystery to me what the hell is he hanging on to the Nationalist Party for!

Since it seems that the PM did not seek consensus from the Opposition for the nomination of Dr Borg then I take it that the PL has NO obligation to keep him till the end of the term (2014).
In these circumstances wouldn't be in the interest of Malta to seek consensus? - I'm presuming, of course, that no such consensus was sought.

And who told you Labour will win the next election for sure? I recall the PL celebrating before the last three elections and lost all of them. A week in politics is a long time.

Is it possible that after 8 years in the EU there is still such ignorance as to how it works?
1. The nomination of an EU commissioner is the prerogative of the Prime Minister and not parliament!

2.
Once a commissioner is nominated and accepted he no longer represents Malta but the whole EU and no Maltese givernment, PL or otherwise can remove him! He is no longer answerable to the Maltese parliament or any Maltese Prime Minister!
Understood?

Once the prime minister did not seek consensus on the nomination for EU commissioner, now that he has nominated Dr. Tonio Borg for the post. And once Dr. Franco Debono has already declared that he would vote against Dr. Borg's nomination in parliament if his nomination ever comes to the vote, then Dr. Borg does not enjoy the backing of Malta's parliament !

Don't you feel somewhat embarrassed at your total lack of what's going on? Is it possible you don't even have an inkling of an idea about what is what and where is where? Tonio Borg will appear before the EUROPEAN Parliament delegation and not before the national parliament of Malta and he therefore seeks no backing from the Maltese parliament. In this scene, FD simply has no say in the matter.

No wonder you've been in opposition the last quarter century. With logic like that you may even deserve half of hundred.

Dear Mr Privitera, it is about time you realize that Dr Debono will oppose anything and anybody. Clearly this is a babyish attitude that is not doing Malta any good. Whilst that Dr Debono may have some valid concerns, I am afraid that his extremely wrong babyish approach to anything and everything has now lost him credibility.

Franco Farrugia: we should all feel embarrased if Tonio Borg is not accepted by the Commission and/or the European parliament ! Do you honestly believe that those who will decide about Dr. Borg's nomination will not know that he does not enjoy the Maltese parliament's backing. and this fact could possibly affect their decision, especially considering Dr.Borg's poor civil-rights record ?

@ Eddy Privitera: And once again, you persist in showing how poorly-informed you are. I sincerely, but very, very sincerely hope that you are not a reflection of today's PL! You show you simply have NO IDEA how things work abroad, in Brussels. MEPs have far more important points to ask Dr Borg than simply considering the disgusting shenigans that are taking place in the national parliament in MT.
