Caritas director Mgr Victor Grech has been awarded the European Citizen's Prize 2012.

The award was presented at Europe House in Valletta by MEPs Simon Busuttil and Louis Grech acting on behalf of the President of the European Parliament.

The European Citizens Prize is awarded by the European Parliament to individuals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding commitment in promoting the European spirit.

Mgr Victor Grech was jointly nominated in May by Mr Grech and Dr Busuttil in recognition of his contribution to Maltese society.

Mgr Grech will now be invited to Brussels for a meeting with the President of the European Parliament.

Mgr Victor Grech concluded the ceremony with a speech including this statement "I am proud to be Maltese and I am proud to be European". In his speech he underlined his satisfaction that this award was the result of cooperation across the political divide. He also underlined the relevance of the European values today and the benefits of society from the European Union while underlining that the European Union has, as yet, not achieved its objectives in its fight against poverty and social exclusion.
