The four millionth green recycling bag was distributed free last week in an initiative to promote waste separation.

Since its inception in 2006, Green Pak has striven to encourage and facilitate the public’s participation in recycling practices, distributing free green recycling bags to households whose local council forms part of the Green Pak recycling scheme.

In addition to distributing door-to-door recycling bags, Green Pak also delivered educational material and leaflets to residents.

Green Pak CEO Mario Schembri said: “Separating waste and recycling at home on a daily basis requires commitment. Our initiative aims to help and encourage more households to start separating their waste. We are confident that many households are more actively engaging in waste separation and recycling practices than before.

Mr Schembri advised to flatten empty packs and plastic bottles that would otherwise take up double the space. “Doubling the bag distribution would only encourage more waste,” he said.

Localities forming part of the Green Pak’s waste recycling scheme are serviced by a weekly door-to-door collection every Tuesday.

Other localities have their collection on other days – Luqa on Thursdays, Victoria on Mondays and San Ġwann on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
