Middle Sea Race off to windy start

The Middle Sea Race got off to a spectacular start in Grand Harbour this morning, despite a strong head wind which complicated matters for the 83 participating boats.

The boats were classified in five starts according to their class, with the largest yachts - the maxi boats - leaving last.

Their run out of the harbour saw many of the boats cluster together to get the best of the conditions, narrowly avoiding collision.

The Middle Sea Race, which takes participants all round Sicily and back to Malta, is the last major race of the year in the Mediterranean.
