Accused of robbing former minister
Pillai Sivasankara, an Indian man resident in Msida, was remanded in custody today after being accused of stealing a gold ringworth €2,329 from former minister Wistin Abela on Tuesday.
He allegedly pulled the ring off wheelchair-bound Mr Abela, 79, at Our Lady of Sorrows Street in Zejtun. He also tried to steal his watch.
Sivasankara was also accused of harassing people by public begging and carrying a false ID card.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.
Police inspectors Tony Cachia and Kevin Pulis prosecuted.
Mr Abela was a long-serving minister under Dom Mintoff and Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, having been responsible for Air Malta and other public investments. He was also briefly responsible for finance.

As soon as he is given the appropiate sentence ,deport him. Why does this Indian have a right to live and commit crimes in Malta? Dont we have enough with our own criminals as well as those who come from the EU?Deport him to his home country where he can do as he pleases, but he has no right to be here.

why are ministers made to look like demi Goods in Malta??
All they are is public servants who get to give them self's a pay rise every now and then? plus they get to play with public money NOT there own.........

Exactly. The fact that the theft was carried out on a vulnerable person is more than enough.

No there won't be a suspended sentence as long as the victim is a public figure.

Unlikely because it's a foreigner and the victim was one of the former elite - but this is Malta and no one has any idea what daft sentence the courts may decide on (assuming he is convicted).
To fix the courts failings, there needs to be a full sentencing review with new guidelines, and a new bigger prison built - but this would upset the easy lifestyle of the lawyers and politicians.
