Tristan B jailed for nine years

Entertainer Emanuel Balzan, known as Tristan B, has been jailed for nine years after being convicted of fraud of €750,000.

He was found guilty of having defrauded a Gozitan farmer in a case which happened in 2009.

The farmer, Joseph Sultana, had said he had lent money to Balzan after having been falsely promised that the funds would be returned along with investments and access to agricultural aid.

That's the rub! I feel that if one is found guilty of misappropriation or fraud the court should get the guilty party to make amends + interest and costs! And not simply lock the guilty person in a cell and let him/her enjoy the spoils!

@Toni Borg,
The average worker would have to work for forty (40) years to earn such an amount at today's salary.

Mr Kevin Zammit

Oct 18th 2012, 21:35

what 9 years!?! Yours and mine you mean ... for him it would be roughly 7 if not less thanks to good behaviour and pardons since a jail term year is 2/3 of a normal year

So, we know what price the courts value 1 raped life ... approximately 277,000EUR

750,000 / 9 = 83,333.33
83,333.33 * 10 = 833,333.33 / 3
= 277,000

Farmers, like in other countries like Spain, became rich when their agricultural land was sold for development and poor farmers became rich overnight.

Oct 18th 2012, 14:58

Your suggested reasons are in no way an excuse to defraud anyone, and yes the Courts would know the facts before issuing sentence., so the would be Maltese Frank Sinatra should have known better and is now paying the price of his illicit gains.

Franco Attard Trevisan

Oct 18th 2012, 15:03

if he is a 'talented singer' as you are saying he could made money singing instead of defrauding people... I have lost count of the number of times I've seen this guy on the local papers being brought to court for defrauding people. And apart from the newspaper I never even heard about this 'Sinatra'!

I'm curious to know who 'touted' him as 'the Maltese Frank Sinatra'

James Dewar

Oct 18th 2012, 15:14

Are you serious? His alleged talent as a singer has no relevance whatsoever to his activities as a serial fraudster. Had he been the subject of blackmail I have no doubt that the fact would have been included in his defence plea. Maltese Frank Sinatra?....... "He did it his way!!"

J. Debono

Oct 18th 2012, 15:21

@ G. Patiniott

he likes to party - the reason why

he has no children, he is not sick, he is not blackmailed, but he does spend an enormous amount of money in partying, and entertaining guests.

Tax Dept & VAT can never check the amount of money any farmer in Malta or Gozo earns.

One just has to look at the cars that they drive to know the size of profit they make. in addition, they also get funds from EU, which is mostly pocketed.

One of the many "professions" that evade tax and cannot be caught.

James Dewar

Oct 18th 2012, 15:23

The accused and now convicted person in this case is Emanuel Balzan.....not the Gozitan farmer who is the victim!

George Camilleri

Oct 18th 2012, 17:09

a mystery identical to those heavily tattooed, uneducated persons registering as unemployed and claiming social assistance, yet driving executive cars or powerful SUVs (a considerable luxury) scattered around Malta.

If tax evasion and undeclared income is what you're implying, it's a national hobby and not just a Gozitan passtime

Well at least the other prisoners won't have to demonstrate against missed concerts now, they will have there own in house artiste.

James Dewar

Oct 18th 2012, 15:18

Might help make up for the prisoners who were so dismayed and upset at being denied entry to the Winter Moods concert! They have their own "in house" performer but will he do free shows or will the audience have to pay a price like his other victims.
