Naxxar circus location moved - council

The location of the planned circus at Naxxar has been changed to the parking in front of the former Trade Fair Grounds, the council said in a statement today.
Residents of Naxxar have been petitioning against the planned circus, which was to be situated in a field bordering St Paul Street, a main road, close to the old Trade Fair grounds.
The council said this afternoon that it had discussed the matter during a public meeting in August during which the residents’ preoccupations were all considered.
Councillors had unanimously agreed there was no reason why they should object since they were convinced that the organisers were taking all necessary measures for there not to be unnecessary inconvenience for residents.
In spite of this, the council requested the organisers to move the circus to the parking in front of the Trade Fair. It also asked for the field to also be used for parking to avoid unnecessary problems. The council’s request was accepted, it said.
The council said that the organisers would also be cleaning the place daily and if this was not done, it reserved the right to issue default notices against the organisers.
The council noted that the majority of shows were being held at 5.30pm and at 7.30pm with the shows being over by 9.30pm.
Circo Fantasy, being brought over by Circus Events Ltd, plans to open its doors between November 8 and December 9.

E Schembri - It's obvious that unfortunately you do not like animals so you will NEVER understand how and what animal lovers feel when animals are not treated well. As to the mess, every responsible owner MUST clean up after the dog and not leave a mess. There are fines today you know. Those who enjoy watching circus animals are poor fellows

Could the Naxxar LC inform us residents were will the urine of all these animals will be directed to? Same organizer had the circus in Floriana last year. Apart from parking trailers on the Granaries, urine dripped down all the way to the stairs located just opposite the Catholic Institute. Were were the Health Authorities at that time? History repeats itself ? What a shame ! Money talks !

There is ony one sensible thing to do . BOYCOTT THE CIRCUSES !! Why do the authorities keep on bringing over Circuses when they are aware of all the tension this causes to all us animal lovers? You cruel people !

You know, not every one is a so called "animal lover", especially with the mess of feces that your pets leave on our streets, pavements and open spaces.
So just like we NON pet owners tolerate your pets, do the same and tolerate people with different ideas.
Having said that, I don't go to circuses as I don't consider circus animals entertaining, but others do, so have some respect.

Don't look the other way when an animal is hit by a car - take the license and report the car to the police immediately. This is worse than cruelty to circus animals - often these animals are left to die a painful death (or to be run over again) while the driver whizzes merrily away. Pay attention to the strays and report those who run them over. We have enough cruelty here inflicted by us.

Our week kneed government as usual are behind the times to in allowing live animal circuses to operate in this country. Animal circuses should be banned as a source of entertainment and give our children the wrong message. Anyway we have enough performing monkeys out here to last us for generations.

I agree 100 per cent with Mr. Jacob Vella and Ms. Lorraine Farrugia.
I think it would be more educational for our children had the circus had various artists and such like.
After all, is it the animals who benefit from this circus or is it the people that get them and put money in their pockets.?
Jacob Vella

It is the whole circus that should be banned - apart from being insensitive to animal cruelty and exploitation we would be deceiving ourselves and our children in perceiving such heinous practice as amusement and the ideal family outing.
On the other hand I would definitely welcome any circus which solely consists of human artists who perform by their own will.

Regarding the circus, the Education Dept. must take action to forbid any form of advertisements in schools for this 'show of infliction of pain and suffering'
It would be nicer to see shows with a true Pulcinell.

Mr. DeMartino
As for your statement, which is severe cruelty aswell, though not as horrendous as the cruelty the circus animals endure, it is a good point to pressure the authorities to introduce a system were the animals are put humanly unconscious prior being slaughtered.

I am one if the people who dot not agree the Circus should be allowed in SPTT. I am against Circuses in general because i do not agree with the way the animals are treated and kept in cages. On top of all this, the Trade Fair grounds are very close to my place of residence and yes, it will be a nuisance for us. Caravans, noise pollution, cars, take away stands etc etc.

Here in Swatar we have tower cranes constantly building every nook and cranny. Everybody has one problem or another in their residential area. So don't be too surprised, after all we live in a Mickey mouse country.

Dear parents....please do not take your children to any circus that includes animals. The cruelty that goes into training these animals to perform 'unnatural' acts is quite shocking. Let us teach our children that animals should not be maltreated so as to treat us humans!

I totally agree with all the comments in defence of circus animals. My question is to our MPs. How many signitures will it take to ban animal circuses in Malta? I am also curious to know if schools organise trips to these animal degrading and abusing venues.

Why all this fuss about the Circus? The news mentioned 2 different companies coming over to Malta during the same period. One has the liberty to choose.
L-Ghazla f'idejk.
One is in Floriana . . . and the other is in Naxxar; both locations appropriate for any activity as both of them have been there much before most buildings around have popped up. In fact, many land owners have benefited.

An inconvenience?? Is that all the residents of Naxxar have to say? Couldn't they have mentioned how much more 'inconvenient' it is to the animals. Perhaps that is what the protest should have been about!

In Italy local councils are gathering to ban animal circuses that come over there territory following the recent death of a giraffe that escaped from a circus in Modena. I think that it is about time that also in Malta local counsils should follow suit and do the same.

Poor animals! Alas, poor Naxxar residents in the vicinity of the venue! Enjoy and a pat on the back to Naxxar Local Council. One question: Does the Mayor and/or any of the Council Members who approved the location of the circus live anywhere near the venue? Or is another case of NIMBY?

The Naxxar Local Council's priorities are wrong! It is not merely a question of whether the circus is going to create inconvenience to residents but the fact that this is AN ANIMAL CIRCUS and it involves cruelty to animals. In every civilised country, animal circuses are being banned. And in Malta? We get two instead of one! This is disgusting and shameful.

Have you ever had the misfortune of seeing how animals are treated before being slaughtered to provide the "pure beef" for take away hamburgers.
Franco Farrugia
Oct 18th 2012, 20:04
It astounds me a lot, the way people like Mr DeMartino manage to bring in arguments that have absolutely nothing to do with the argument at hand.
1. How do you know that I condone burgers?
2. What makes you think that I condone the way many animals are slaughtered?
3. Difference between food and entertainment, anyone?
U leee!
Giov DeMartino
Oct 19th 2012, 08:05
Mr Farrugia must have misunderstood my comment. I wrote what I wrote NOT to condone the cruelty inflicted on these poor animals. Absolutely not, but I made my comments to make readers realize that animal cruelty is more widespread than we think. Yes, there is a difference between food and entertainment. I wish you could see how these animals are treated BEFORE they are slaughtered.
Giov DeMartino
Oct 19th 2012, 08:07
For example: a thick rope tied round the neck of bull and a tractor dragges the poor animals all the way to the slaughterhouse. And some 3 or 4 bas....kicking the poor animal in its face for no reason whatsoever. But you have to see these obscenities yourself to see what I mean.

Is this the same council that rightfully and for the good of all Naxxar residents refused the Trade Fair to be held in the very place where the circus has been located.
The trade fair was refused because of traffic problems, will visitors to the circus be travelling by balloons.
The Naxxar people are being trampled upon and ignored but these same people will have their way in a short time now
