Law does not allow animal cemeteries
The law does not allow for the building of cemeteries for animals, Resources Minister George Pullicino said in reply to a parliamentary question, quoting council regulation 1069/2009
He explained that dead animals are considered as being animal by-products which need to be burnt.
The only way to develop a cemetery for animals is to have an incinerator, with the ashes then being buried.
An owner may bury a dead pet on his property as long as this is only occasional.

What's the point of any kind of cemetery really?

I am sure that there is somewhere in Malta, where the area is rocky and of no use, that can be filled in with eccess rubble. If this project can be done as a private enterprise, I am sure that in the long run it will be benefical to the pet owners who I am sure would be willing to pay for a little plot for their beloved pets, and a return on the investment.

Maybe not a cemetery, but we should have a crematorium! Why not? This is 2012....we have many expats who live here and dont believe in burial, why shouldnt we be able to cater for their needs? Also, why shouldn't the rest of us who have animals that we love as if they were born to us be able to give them a decent burial? Cremate them? Because of your tax money? YOU would pay what, 50 c each?

Maltese children have to sacrifice themselves and their parents' resources to study overseas as we don't even have a veterinary doctor's course at our university. We have farm animals and pets galore, but.....
So can you imagine a pet crematorium? Oh, and don't tell me about he one at the abbatoir either!

Fao Janet Bayes .
Where did I say it was a quaint British custom .In any event now you know someone who has a pet bureid in a pet cemetary other than their garden and what is the relevance of bringing now many crematorium for humans in to the argument? Also contrary to what you state human being get cremated not incinerated as their is no such thing as a incineratorium is there?

ghandi's said: the quality of a civilization is judged by its love towards aniimals. it is ahameful to say that these creatures should be treated like a waste by-product. they provide us with so much love, entertainment, and enhance our quality of life. an animal cemetery wouldn't take up so much space.other countries have them, why are we lagging behind?

Ċimiterji għall-annimali jonqosna. Aħjar naraw kif nagħmlu u nnaqqsu ċ-ċimiterji tan-nies, mela nżidu tal-annimali. Dalwaqt ikollna aktar ċimiterji milli ġonna għall-ħajjin, jew naħseb diġà lħaqna din l-estremità.

Min irid jidfen xi annimal, dejjem jista' jaghmel hekk fi gnien privat, imma mhux fuq art pubblika

I have a dog and a cat... they are my pets, however when the pass away, I will surely miss them... My last cat, which died at 14 years & was burnt in our garden, and her ashes mixed with the soil.
My point is that, pets are pets... firstly, we live in a small island... So please, don't expect to have what the states or mainland Europe may have... Our land is very limited.

Id rather be buried next door to a dog than any Maltese politician!

Mr Cauchi, being buried next to a Maltese politician might be your key to get to heaven...They get a lot of perks and getting a key to heaven might be one of those perks. Never say never. hehehe

I think the problem here is that the Government haven't figured out how they could make enough in bribes to get a pet cemetery to work in their favour. Give them time as I'm sure they will figure it out.

Why is this stupid law only in Malta, many countries have animal cemetries where people who after years of having loved and cherished four legged friends can give them a decent burial. It is so very heart breaking to have to depose of your faithfull companion like trash. It makes the grieving process soooo much more difficult.
Levi Grech

I think there should be a cemetery for animals especially dogs and cats. After all those years of caring, loving companionship i think the dog or cat needs a dignified burial. Besides in certain cases some animals love u more than humans !

I assure you that animals changed the world and still do just like a human being still does (which btw humans are also considered animals) I think that there should be a cemetery for 'animals' just like some people who have done wrong are still given respect and buried according to their beliefs.

A quaint British custom? No-one I ever met ever had a pet buried anywhere other than their own back garden.
I find it bizarre that it is possible to "incinerate" an animal but not a human being.

FAO Janet Bayes,
If you had the time and I had the inclinattion I could take you to at least five(5) pet cemetaries in the UK that I alone know about and I have two dear treasured companions buried in one such pet cemetary in North Wales were I have a plot.
Janet Bayes
Oct 18th 2012, 17:40
@ Peter Murray - - - doesn't make it a "quaint british custom" the fact that you know of 5 cemeteries. I know of more than 5 crematoria for human remains - - is this a quaint british custom too?
