Hundreds of students at the Junior College in Msida were sent home this morning after a bomb warning.
The AFM bomb squad was on site to search the building.
The warning turned out to be a hoax.

EXCUSE ME!
Most of the people commenting find this either funny or rediculous and are only pointing out the mistakes and what should have been done and how fun this may have been for us, well it wasn't! Have any of you seen the looks on the freshmen's faces? Do you know how scared most of us actually were? A bomb threat, this isn't a joke even if at the end of the day nothing was found!!

Thing is that we left only to find out that lectures and tutorials continued as scheduled after 2pm and we werent notified in any way thus some of us missed important lectures

No planning as usual - the assembly point needs to be far enough away to avoid flying glass from an explosion, there should also be emergency monitors appointed to guide students to the assembly point and take roll calls and ensure everyone left the building, this evacuation plan should be practiced once a month - etc.

Boasting of localeducation apart education seems to be going down the drain some see it as funny making hoax calls.
How about introducing Health and Safety officers in each and every school not simply to treat such cases but also to increase the level of safety in school. No evacuation plan was followed here which shows how narrow minded authorities are about H&S giving only lip service.

Evacuation from school - This has also happened when a bomb from the second world war was found at MCAST. A person went around to inform all the classes and students. Again no alarm or evacuation plan! Students have been seen instead going to the assembly point, which does not exit, they went out, others went to take their cars out, others left home etc. Is this the way of an evacuation plan?

Pity that in such such cases no marshalls were present during the evacuation. This may be seen clearly from the clip placed. Students sitting everywhere, many left home, other in the near-by bars etc etc! Students are not informed about the evacuation proceedure in most schools. I have my doubts on how may fire drills are carried out! The minimum requested by law is twice a year.

technology has improved enough, i think, for the culprit to be caught.

To my knowledge the students were not sent home. Lessons have since resumed.

This is really stupid, evacuating the students and leave them in front of the premises... What about evacuating the surroundings? Isn't it safer? or because till now nothing happened we will keep this bad practice going on?
Should they be put at least 100 meters away from the affected area?
Aldo Busuttil

Joe you are right! There is no evacuation plan, no alarms and more than that no assembly point. Who is responsible from these students? Where is the health and safety policy? Where are the fire evacuation drills that suppose to be carried out every six months?

What a shame.
Why do some stoop so low?
What are they achieving?
Tougher laws are needed.

Great shame that there appears to be no education of school children/students about keeping off roads - they appear to just swarm out of education buildings and expect traffic to stop for them. It does not help when the authorities close off roads at school opening/closing times to encourage them to ignore any pedestrian rules of the road.
Luke Scicluna
Oct 18th 2012, 13:25
The roads were closed anyway to prevent people from entering the area.
Jason Galea
Oct 18th 2012, 13:47
As you can see at the top right corner, the roads were closed for traffic!
Elaine Compagno
Oct 18th 2012, 13:49
It seems like the area was cordoned off by police and so no traffic would be allowed access.

Do you think that there is space for all of them on the pavements?

Oct 18th 2012, 15:38
Roads closed - good, area cordonned off - good, and what about the students? Where are the lists of names of all students that have been suppose to be taken after the evacuation took place to ensure that everybody has evacuated from the place?

Here we go again....
when i was a student at JC, (2000- 2002) these bomb scares had become so frequent that the administration (rightly or wrongly) had decided to leave students attending the lectures while the bomb disposal suad was searching the building....
as usual i am certain that today's bomb scare is just a hoax...

The amazing is that the school does not have an evacuation plan and not even an alarm. Only the security on site went around class by class asking the students to go out. Not even an assembly point is found while non of the students were read to ensure that all persons have been evacuated from the school. Amazing!!!!

The problem with bomb scares is that they have to be taken so seriously :/
Peter Saliba
Oct 18th 2012, 13:19
They MUST be taken seriously, irrespectively of whether such threats are real or fake. Remember that prevention is always better than cure.
