I wonder how many of these have a phantom ''unknown father''.....Abusers should be hunted down and fined plus all benefits stopped. Stealing is a crime after all.

It does not mean that if you don't want to get married, but still want to have kids, take social benefits. The aspect of being single mother with 'unknown father' means that you have full right for the social benefits. What worries me is, that these young and even adult women have these wonderful gestures even towards their parents (which I hope that they pay taxes also), STEALING!

I can understand that some young teenagers can become pregnant by mistake and the welfare should help them, but many of them they become pregnant on purpose so they not go to work for minimum wage. The very strange think is that they register the baby unknown father. The social security department should give 4 chances to bring forward the males for DNA to identify the father or no money .

And the story goes on thanks to the welfare state now we have abusing single mothers abusing the welfare state
free hospital turned into an imposed old age home by the same mentality people who dump their elders and block the hospital
free this and free that amounting to a staggering nation where the worker is being burdened with heavy taxes while single mothers enjoy fun.

Oct 18th 2012, 13:26
Incredible. This has now become the norm. I think more babies were born to single mothers than to married couples! Babies do not come just like that. If the mother does not know the father, then, I in my opinion, there is only one word for that mother!
Nothing has been done to discourage this but I think it is about someone responsible wakes up.
Siddhartha Gautama
Oct 18th 2012, 13:21
You mustn't throw the baby out with the bath water. That being said, there should be random checks to verify if the social benefits claimed are justifiable or if they merely form part of the long list of people in Malta who are committing fraud as if it were their given right!

if i am not mistaken, single signifies the status of a person. it does not mean unemployed, bummers, teenagers or men eaters. A percentage (how much i don' t know) of these ladies are self supported, work and raise their own family. Some are single by choice and not on any social benefits. i for one have a number of friends who are single mothers, have an honest job and have a good pay.

Single women is a fake, actualy they have more than one man. This girls they don't just love men but also they love freedom. Who can blame them? This is the western modern life, that's what I tell my girls to do,have children, and stay single, appreciate your freedom.

What good advice you give to your daughters!!!! vera bla sens li qed tghid..."have children and stay single"........if you want freedom just dont have children at all and when the times comes.. then think of having children....... dont let children grow up without a dad figure in their life!!!!! unbeleivable some people these days!!pffff

Oct 18th 2012, 15:59
Anthony Sultana, so in your books not getting married and having children is \freedom' I would think that you are a sixteen year old but since you wrote ,quote 'that's what I tell my girls to do\ unquote, you must be older in age but very immature!

The government should address this problem. Why should I sponsor a child of someone who I dont know? Is it some kind of new business. Every child must have a father ....at least I think...so he or they should pay for supporting for their child and in case they don't have the money then their parents must help support them.
Carmel Tabone
Oct 18th 2012, 12:31
you are very right. Every single mother is single for the social benefits being given. I think it is very sweet to say that you don't know the father. So this person must have gone out with dozens of men, and she knew what she was doing,so why do we have to support them? If a single mother was raped by someone, then it is ok, but otherwise NO.
Ronnie Callus
Oct 18th 2012, 12:35
Well said Ruben, how one can imagine that these girls does not know with whom they were. They should shoulder their responsability and if not their parents do. It's not fair that citizens pay taxes for others known fault. At schools we have enough education, thus there are no excuses if it was not a rape. The government must catch the bull from its horns.
C Agius
Oct 18th 2012, 14:46
Isn't it the right of every woman to decide whether or not she wants to marry? Or does she have to be raped for Maltese men to think its ok for her to be unmarried and with child?
And before you answer and ask why should tax payers spend money on single mothers, may I add that tax payers pay contributions for married parents.

Probably the Government should work on this not by adding up social benefits but on enforcing the law and check on such cases if it's true or not single mothers are actually single and living alone...
C AZZOPARDI
Oct 18th 2012, 13:04
Yes some of them have a steady relationship with the father of the child, but for the sake of the social benefits they declare unknown father. I think its about time that some action is taken on this issue and each case should be truly investigated. How come some single mothers have children from different 'unknown' fathers!! Come on time to take action and not waste more useful money!.

That is over 10%. Can we have more details? Although I can well imagine the nationality of most of these.

Does this figure include unmarried women that live with partners? I wouldn't class those as single.
Joseph Borg
Oct 18th 2012, 11:32
Haha... Good one. If the authorities check each and every one of them, they'll find out that most of them are living with their partner without civil recognition. Guess what? They'll claim for social benefits even though their partner still mantains them.

as much as the bona fide mothers need to be helped, on the other hand non bona fide ones should be punished. Taking advantage of such a noble scheme in not only stealing, but putting at risk the benefits of those who really need this help!

Nowhere did I read that these single mothers are all on social benefits Mr Camilleri. Not all single mothers are young teens that do not know who the father of their child is. "Single" is just a status.
