John Guillaumier sticks to his guns to the extent of firing a salvo. Having been offered all facilities, he had three letters printed on September 6, 28 and 29,with the latest cynical tirades on October 6 and 10.

It seems that he has taken over from Ramon Casha – with a bang. He had enough time to flex his muscles; now he can expect some opposition, at least by me, if given the chance. All he did in his letter was to give the finishing touches to Martin Scicluna’s more elaborate letter (September 28).

They had both better consider what Adrian Mifsud and Mgr Anton Gauci wrote about the matter.

Mr Guillaumier should desist from writing more derogatory letters against believers in God, the Church and God Himself. His letters cannot do any good and he is ploughing a lone furrow. Decades of official atheism and persecution in Russia did not succeed in cancelling God from people’s hearts. A hundred million Christians have been killed throughout the years and, undoubtedly, the Roman Catholic Church was the most conspicuous victim. It is thought that more people have died for their faith during the last century than in the previous 19. The latest bloodbath and lions’ den is Nigeria. Such heroic episodes show God’s might and glory in their apex exactly where there is weakness.

Need I mention the highly acknowledged cultural, educational, pastoral, philanthropic, humanitarian and healthcare work carried out throughout the world by the Catholic Church?

Such a tragic drama unfolding before Mr Guillaumier’s eyes does not provoke a tear of compassion and admiration. He is insensitive and conveniently ignores the grieving only to trumpet to the four winds the little warts and wrinkles. Without Christ, his heart has hardened up to a point that he cannot relish the salutary effects of faith, hope and charity – cardinal commodities we Christians enjoy.
