PM 'to act fast' to nominate new Commissioner

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said today he will be acting fast to nominate a new Commissioner from Malta.

Dr Gonzi was speaking at the European People’s Party Congress in Bucharest.

He referred to John Dalli’s resignation from the European Commission yesterday saying:

“This week we were all shocked by the unexpected resignation of Mr John Dalli, the member of the European Commissioner from Malta, following revelations of an investigation conducted by the anti-fraud office, OLAF. Mr Dalli has categorically denied any wrong-doing but resigned his post in order to defend his reputation and that of the Commission.”

Dr Gonzi said he was fully committed to the integrity of the institutions and will be acting fast to nominate a new Commissioner from Malta.

“I will be communicating with President Barroso in this sense immediately in order to make sure that this episode is quickly closed in the interest of public trust in the institutions.”

Dr Gonzi is accompanied by MEP Simon Busuttil, PN information director Frank Psaila and Ryan Callus,  vice-president Youth of the EPP.

sewwa qed tghid imma dawn in-nies iridu li ninsew l-istorja u nghixu fil-futur biss. Li jekk jerga jkun hemm gvern tal-labour bl-istess nies tal-passat ikollna l-istess stejjer. iridu jnessu l-passat sabiex jisirqu l-voti taz-zaghzagh li ma jghixuhx. Il-Malti jghid li min jitwieled tond ma imutx kwadru, u hemm proverbji ohra li ma nixtieqx insemmihom hawn ukoll.

Brian, lil min tafu ma hemmx ghalfejn tistaqsi ghalih. Jiena kien hemm perjodu meta bdejt nahseb li l-LPse jaghmel is-success li kien qieghed isemmi tal-bidla bis-serjeta imma bdew diehla elementi fil-partit li minflok bihom jista isir rigress minflok il-progress li dejjem wieghed JOe MUsca bdejt bil-mod il-mod nitlef il-fiducja, ghax jiena nemmen li l-lupu jibdel sufu imma mhux ghemilu.

Why not report it then ? Dalli didn't report it and is now investigated for fraud. If I smell corruption, I will report it to the police commissioner and it will be investigated.

@ANTHONY DIMECH - I have managed to decipher what you tried to write because it makes no sense in english or substance.
We need a change as we are already head on course for collision , I hope this is what you meant.
GonziPN time is well over. They have brought Malta on its knees both financially as well as credibility.

Why is Labour in such a hurry to appoint a commissioner. Whoever the government appoints now will only have two years to go anyway, then Labour can appoint Alfred Sant or whoever it wants.

3 or 4 months without a Commissioner? I don't think this will be acceptable to the EU Commission, they will probably select another commissioner from another country

Dennis Zammit

Oct 17th 2012, 19:30

Because the current PM has the country's mandate to govern this country and its people till at least March 2013. You have to accept that notwithstanding MLP's dreams of something else.
