Malta’s U-19 team put their heavy defeats to the Netherlands and Poland behind them yesterday as they trounced San Marino 4-0 to end their commitments in the UEFA mini-tournament (Group 3) on a heartening note.
Branko Nisevic’s boys took the lead on 38 minutes when midfielder Daniel Zerafa won and converted a penalty.
The Maltese retained the initiative in the second period. They were awarded a second penalty on 57 minutes and this time it was Johan Bezzina who scored from the spot to double Malta’s lead.
Malta wrapped up their win with two quick goals midway through the second half courtesy of Ayrton Micallef (72) and Luke Montebello (75).
The Netherlands won the mini-tournament after two stoppage-time goals from substitute Nick de Bondt gave them a 3-1 win over hosts Poland in Wronki.
The Netherlands topped the group with nine points to progress to the Elite round at the expense of runners-up Poland, three points adrift.
Malta were third on three points ahead of San Marino who failed to pick a point in three matches.
