Ana Steinbach-Torres, an as­so­ciate professor of education at the Federal University of Paraiba, João Pessoa, Brazil, will give a talk entitled Sexuality, Health and Democracy: Constructing Early Childhood Education at the inaugural session of the University’s 16th annual Work in Progress in the Social Studies (WIPSS) seminar series.

Prof. Steinbach-Torres’s expertise is on education and health, with a specific focus on children’s sexuality. She holds a Master of Arts in Education and Ph.D in Collective Health/Human Sciences and Health.

She is Professor of Research and Planning Education at the Federal University of Paraíba and has experience in the fields of Education, especially in kindergarten education, focusing on the the themes of sexuality, infantile education, family, childhood, day care centres and youth engagement.

She is currently a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles, the US, and an international research asso­ciate of the Paulo Freire Institute, UCLA.

She is currently in the process of developing a comparative study between Brazil and the US about the relationship between family and school among gay and lesbian families that have children in school.

The WIPSS seminar series aims to provide researchers in social studies with a forum where they can obtain feedback on their ideas or findings in an informal setting and to act as an interface between the University and civil society.

The seminars are convened by Paul Clough, professor of anthropology, Peter Mayo, professor of education, and Michael Briguglio, an assistant lecturer of sociology at the University of Malta.

The talk will be held on Thursday from 6pm to 7pm, and will be followed by a discussion, in Lecture Centre room 120, situated below the University’s library and Erin Serracino Inglott hall.
