A man from Birżebbuġa was yesterday remanded in custody after being charged with conspiring to steal necklaces from elderly women.

Joseph Xuereb, 49, pleaded not guilty to conspiring to commit a crime in Tarxien, Ġżira and Sliema between September 15 and 21.

He was charged with stealing a necklace from an 80-year-old woman in Sliema and from an 82-year-old in Gżira on September 15.

Mr Xuereb was also charged with stealing a third necklace from a 78-year-old woman in Tarxien on September 21 and seriously injuring her.

Before Magistrate Giovanni Grixti, he pleaded not guilty to committing a crime during the term of a suspended sentence and relapsing.
