The parish of St Sebastian in Qormi rejoiced and thanked God when it was announced that Mgr Charles Scicluna was to be appointed Auxiliary Bishop. Mgr Scicluna spent his childhood in this parish.

Even though he was ordained a priest while living in Lija –whose people must be very proud of him – Mgr Scicluna remained close to the Qormi parishioners and the parish itself.

Many of us remember Mgr Scicluna participating in the ceremony of the cosecration of St Sebastian’s parish church in January 1986, when he was still a deacon.

The main sodality of the parish, Sodalita’ San Sebastjan, comprising the three confraternities, that of the Holy Sacrament, the Confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Confraternity of Our Lady of Rosary, considers Mgr Scicluna a special friend and benefactor.

He has led celebrations in which the sodality participated, and also inaugurated an exhibition on San Ġorġ Preca organised by the sodality to mark the canonisation of the Maltese saint of which Mgr Scicluna himself was the postulator.

This memorable photo shows Mgr Scicluna with the previous parish priest, Walter Cauchi, and members of St Sebastian’s Sodality in St Sebastian’s parish church after celebrating the anniversary of the consecration of the parish church on January 19, 2009, the eve of the liturgical feast of the patron saint of the parish.

While all the members of St Sebastian’s Sodality of Qormi, together with all the parishioners wish Mgr Scicluna ad multos annos, we promise him our prayers while we eagerly await the day he comes to our parish church as a Bishop.

Together with him, the parish priest and the parish community, we will celebrate and thank the Lord for this grace bestowed on us all.
