The IEEE Malta Section is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Region 8 with two presentations at Villa Bighi, Kalkara, on October 19.

The IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional society, and comprises more than 360,000 members who conduct and participate in its activities in 150 countries. The IEEE Region 8 was established in April 1962 and has sections and chapters from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The two speakers at the Villa Bighi event will showcase emerging technologies and concepts in ICT and engineering.

Fabrizio Granelli, the IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer for 2012/13 and an associate professor in telecommunications at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science of Italy’s University of Trento, will talk about green networking design.

He aims to provide an overview of the current status of the internet in terms of energy efficiency, focusing on the backbone, wireless access and data centre design methodologies required to enter the era of the green internet.

John N.A. Brown will be presenting ubiquitous computing and calm technology. He will focus on the advances in the evolution of human computer interaction through a truly human-centred endeavour, and the development of a new empirical tool to measure the calm in our technology.

John Brown has been recognised by two of Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence for his research in workplace biomechanics and applied mathematics. He is currently a PhD candidate with the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme in Interactive and Cognitive Environments, working on interaction unification across distributed interfaces.

This event is supported by the Malta Council for Science and Technology. For more information, contact c.debono@ieee.org.
