The Opposition has called for the publication of a study outlining the impact of a wind farm off the Mellieħa coast.

In a series of pointed questions, Labour environment spokesman Leo Brincat said the Government had reneged on its civic duty to publish the study even though it had communicated it to various local councils.

Mr Brincat shed doubt on the progress of the Sikka l-Bajda wind farm, Malta’s biggest alternative energy project that is necessary for it to achieve EU targets.

The project is still on the drawing board and studies are being carried out with the latest development being a floating wind turbine to assess the impact on an important bird colony in the area.

The Government hit back at Mr Brincat, accusing the Opposition of trying to stir controversies where there were none.

The intention was always to create energy from wind and the impact studies were passed on to the local councils for their feedback. “We are following the planning authority’s recommendations to the letter,” the Government said, justifying the recent development.
