Births to single mums
Unwed mothers had a total of 311 babies in the first four months of this year. 278 of the mothers were Maltese, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said in reply to a parliamentary question this evening.
He said there were 897 births to single mothers in 2007, the numbers rising to 1,044 in the whole of last year.

To all of you jumping to conclusion:
The 'unknown father' version is not accepted anymore from the authorities. The father has to be named.
Single mother means only that the mother is not married. It does not necessarily mean that she has no partner or that the baby's father is unknown or that she is 13 years old! Just Unwed. Read the article before commenting!

The problem does not stand with the benefits per se, but because there are no verifictions to separate the genuine cases from abusive ones. I was a single mother and a student at University. I got the benefits till I needed them. The day I started working & earned more than minimum wage my benefits stopped. Some single mothers work hard to give their children a better future than a life on benefit

So pay the same benefits to parents with fathers and stop the discrimination that leads to the present system of single women with "fatherless" children.
Seems Malta is full of discriminatory laws. E.g. ripping off foreigners with electric bills etc

Why all this prejudice against single mums? Who said that all these babies were made for profit, not planned or have unknown fathers (not accepted any more) as some morality experts are claiming here? No, it's not a cult! It's simple logic! A signed contract and two rings do not make a family! Love does!

What does make a family than !! a single mother ? and to make matters worse mothers of 13-15 years old whom for sure their babies / children will have to be cared by their parents. Is this not putting a lot of tension on the parents which nowadays a lot are experiencing. How can children take care of other children ? Is it logical and makes sense ?? Most are turning everything upside down .

Mr. Callus, did you read the article above? Where does it say that all these single mothers are 13-15 years old? The article starts with the word 'unwed mothers' which is what 'single mothers' actually mean! It does not mean that these mothers have no partner, just mot married! Now if you have something against unmarried couples, that's your problem! As I said, a contract does not make a family!

I think it's about time we consider the legalization of alternative contraception for the good of society and the average tax payers who dish out millions due to such faults in our laws, not to mention the demographic and social burdens such births cause

So what, what do you expect. It pays to be single.
Wait until the LGBT sector work it out and then you will start to scream.

Very Christian comments I see! Has it ever occurred to you that many unmarried mothers work hard, earn a living and are taxpayers as much as the lot of you?? And just for clarity's sake, being an unmarried mother does not always mean a child has an unknown father, nor with living off the state, and neither with getting more children's allowance if one works hard enough to earn a decent salary.

@ Sharon Chetcuti;
Can one imagine how can a single mother at such a young age and even older, cater for her children when young and at the same time goes to work. This is all the tension putting on yourselves and much worse on your parents who brought you up making them to take care of your kids. Is this fair on your parents instead of making them relax.

I wonder how many of these single mums are really single!? Nowadays it pays for couples to have children outside marriage and request single mums' benefit..

A widow with children 21 and over earning less than 1000 euros a month loses her widow s pension. Her children are still attending university. Not a problem we are few in number will make little impact on the vote at the general election apparently

The important thing is these young people do not use the condom; as if without condom its not the same thing!

Well, it is not the same, but when I was in school, they made sure to never mention the word condom, such an anti-Christianity word. So I guess, what goes around, comes around.
Many of my friends reasoned:
Sex with condom = wrong
Sex before marriage = wrong
So sex before marriage with condom = super wrong
But sex before marriage without condom = slightly less wrong than super wrong.

One wonders how many of these ''unknown father'' cases are actually true. More rigorous checks, control and harsh sentences must be used to weed out the abusers and ease the burden on the tax payer.

Women are financially better off having children out of wedlock. Whose fault is that?. When politicians start valuing marriage and thre family things will improve

How many of them know who the father is? And how much is this going to cost the TAX PAYER? Grow up people and start passing out condoms and birth control pills before this gets out of hand. Stop protecting the UNKNOWN FATHER and start holding these degenerate men responsible for their babies. Use DNA if we have to.Tax Payers are sick and tired for bringing up other people's babies.Pathetic.

it is not a matter of birth control it is a matter of social benefits. If I was a women I would do the same since it is a free for all.

I disagree. They can still get pregnant using condoms. The situation is already out of hand. More education and self control, as well as great responsibility, are needed in such situations.
