Arriva involved in 1,619 accidents
Arriva buses have been involved in 1,619 traffic accidents since the service was introduced in July last year, Transport Minister Austin Gatt said in reply to a parliamentary question this evening.
EXPENSIVE CLOTHES
Meanwhile, replying to another question, Dr Gatt said that two shirts bearing the Transport Malta logo and the Maltese merchant flag, along with trousers for five TM officials at the Morocco Yacht Show in 2011 cost €865.93.
He said the uniforms were needed for stronger exposure and better branding for Malta.
The same clothes were used for this year's edition of the fair.

If one looks at traffic accidents statistics, since the introduction of Arriva, traffic accidents have almost doubled. My mind boggles!!

Not to mention the endless time I saw Arriva bus broke down on the roads. I never remember an old bus was stranded.

Cheer up folks! It's a pity that some Nuts have lost their sense of humour. You should be very happy as we are spoilt for choice these days. You will soon have to choose between Austin and the budget.

What can one expect..driving buses that were inadequate for wider proper roads in the UK.Narrow roads..manouvering past double parked cars and delivery vans..feel sorry for the Drivers really...

I heard thru the grapevine that Boris is coming to Malta on RyanAir fto see how many bendys were in accidents
Meanwhile, I would like to say a big PROSIT to the people who did the latest billboard that says "Austin went to London and all he got us was a lousy bendy bus"
Put a smile on my face while driving home. I just hope no Arriva buses crash into them since TM said they're distracting LOL!

Good one Kevin, but were you around when Alex Sciberras Trigona (LABOUR candidate AGAIN) signed a secret agreement with Korea (Kim il Sung if I remember correctly) to train the SMU Riot Police to supress the Maltese people??
I this case I prefer the Bendy Bus, and appreciate your smile and Boris's visit!

Dr. Gatt for sure these results are not a success story for the well publicized service. This is an average of 3 accidents daily!!!!! on such a small island and such a small fleet, Arriva are far out from recording 0 accidents!!! It would be interesting to know the causes of accidents! Narrow streets, careless driving, traffic jams, carelessnes, lack of training? Please report!!!!!

take it from me its the lack of training and the lack of proffessionals training them it would be intresting to know how many of the arriva trained drivers from the uk who decided to stay here have been involved in blameworthy accidents i would put money on it being almost nil

I think they have been involved in much more just think that one of them had 3 accidents in 1 day. At paceville alone we see at least 2 crashes or very near misses every weekend. Not to mention the number of cars hit while parked and the bus kept going I was about to be one of the victims. And I don't think these figures include crashes with trees, buildings, roundabouts, electric poles and other

The figure of 1619 accidents means little unless set in the context of a comparison with the previous service over the corresponding period of time. Could someone please ask Dr Gatt for that figure so that this one can be meaningful. The number of cases out of the 1619 where Arriva vehicles / drivers were held responsible for the crash would also be interesting.

What about statistics for the old 'system'? Of course not, there were far more accidents with that. A single number on it's own is meaningless. It should include kilometres driven for both systems. That will show that the new system is far less accident prone than the old. I doubt if records were kept before July 2011, which would prove very convenient for those that go against any progress in Mal

\do you have the statistics for the old service or are you just assuming? Even if there were more accidents it would be expected of a bad system but now we have a state of the art service with no buzullotti!
Marco Farrugia
Oct 10th 2012, 20:21
You got to be kidding, right??
With the old system it was in the drivers' interest to be careful with their buses. If the bus was undrivable, they ld be losing their income altogether.
With the "new" (haha) system, drivers do not give a cat's right foot about the bus, their income goes in anyway...

@stephen mifsud:
What about the carcinogenic exhaust fumes from the old wrecks? Why do the Maltese never mention this fact and that is was killing their children? Priorities all wrong, health comes first but that's not part of Maltese culture.
Victor Pulis
Oct 11th 2012, 20:07
Do you also have the statistics on how many people died of cancer directly because of the old buses? Since the Arriva debacle the traffic on our roads has increased drastically neutralizing any benefits by arriva buses.
M. Debono
Oct 10th 2012, 19:27
What a farce! Mr Gatt just resign and save yourself further embarresment, Boris Johnson and Ryanair staff are now starting to mock your antic's along with the entire Maltese population.... have some dignity! Unless obvously you are enjoying the benefits of circa 125 Euro per item of work clothing when working with TM.... What a joke!

How many Arriva drivers were found culpable out of that number is what we want to know and how many of them have been fined for speeding?
James Dewar
Oct 10th 2012, 20:31
Off the top of my head I would hazard a guess that no Arriva driver has been fined for speeding and that Arriva drivers were responsible for most of the crashes. Highly unscientific I know but the whole issue is a guessing game without full statistics!
Steven Smith
Oct 10th 2012, 20:42
and what about car drivers speeding? illegal /dangerous parking, DANGEROUS driving all regular occurances on Malta's roads, you speak as if car drivers do nothing wrong ! THEY are the cause of most of the accidents involving buses because they are to inpatient and ignorant of any other road users
