A record €2.7 million raised from l-Istrina last year has been handed out to charitable organisations by the Malta Community Chest Fund.

President George Abela, addressing the press this morning, thanked the Maltese people for their generosity, pointing out that the amount handed out was 15% higher than the year before.

€900,000 from the funds were handed out to 40 NGOs, including eight involved in animal welfare and the rest was handed out to families in need.

This year's l-Istrina will again be held at Verdala Castle on Boxing Day, but it will also feature links with SmartCity, which, for the first time, will be among the sponsors Other sponsors will be HSBC, GO, and the Good Causes Fund.

Dr Abela said a new project that the Malta Community Chest Fund was now working on was Kenn Ghal Sahhtek, a facility at Mtarfa to help those suffering from eating disorders and obesity. 

Dr Abela also launched the third edition of Tisjier Mill-Qalb, a recipe book issued to raise funds for L-Istrina. The first edition is also reprinted. Copies are for sale at €10. 

Organisations wishing to benefit from this year's L-Istrina funds are to apply by Friday. Details are available on mccf.org.mt
