Malta’s former permanent representative to the EU, Richard Cachia Caruana, is serving as part-time adviser to the Prime Minister on EU affairs without remuneration. He has kept the title of ambassador.

Answering a question in Parliament by Opposition whip Joe Mizzi, Lawrence Gonzi said the government considered that it was in the national interest to continue to make use of Mr Cachia Caruana’s vast experience in EU affairs. Mr Cachia Caruana had agreed to serve as consultant on EU matters, but he had requested to do this only on part-time basis and without a salary. No contract has been drawn up.

Dr Gonzi tabled a letter sent by Godwin Grima, principal permanent secretary, in which he directed that Mr Cachia Caruana should be given the necessary support to carry out his duties “efficiently and effectively” and should be reimbursed for any expenses incurred in relation to these duties.
