Mugliett resigns from House Audit Committee
Nationalist MP Jesmond Mugliett has resigned from the Audit Committee of the House of Representatives.
He resigned after the committee last Wednesday approved the extension of the government lease to the operators of the MCP car park in Floriana. Mr Mugliett said that while he agreed with the extension for the lease, he disagreed that the government would pay €3.2m for the acquisition of some 100 parking slots.
The Audit Committee verified motions for the transfer of government property.
Mr Mugliett, a former Transport Minister, told TVAM that he had not been given proper replies as to how this figure was reached, and his own calculations showed that those parking spaces should cost less.
He had resigned, he said, because he did not want to be part of this decision.
Mr Mugliett also said in reply to questions that he does not intend to vote against the Budget.

As a taxpayer, I totally object to give my money to MCP Car parks. Its not only the ridiculous cost of 100 parking spaces, but to give money to a company that has over all the past years ruined the view of Valletta as one approaches it. I have always felt that MCP just could not care less about our capital city - and GonziPN of course neither. I sense that the decision to make MCP build the roof top garden (at last) is becaue of the bid to make Valletta the cultural capital for 2018. Those who have come to Valletta in the evening/night know that approaching the City, the first thing you see is a concrete car park. It is a total disgrace. I wish that my money would never ever be given to these people.

An explanation is in order. Our tax money is not there to be abused. What the ex-Minister is saying is that Public funds are not being administered transparently enough and that there may be money being directed in someone's pocket, this is a very serious allegation, may be by now we Maltese have already got used to the bad culture growing around us and no answer will be forthcoming!

Let's work this out !
In MCP's rates they state a Eur600 for a yearly pass. If we take that sum and multiply for 100 slots for 15 ( !!! ) years this will add up to EUr 900,000. If we increase that by another 20% to cater for inflation and any other increase in prices this will add up less that Eur 1.1 million. Jes Mugliett rightly so did not agree with this lump sum figure. More than double the price. If they had nothing to hide then why not publish the workings for us to judge. We are paying that money right !

Since it's all about car parks lately, why don't we reform this inadequate system of timed parking (1.5hrs or €23.29 fine) with regards to the residents' parking instead?
Residents (like Ta' Xbiex, Sliema, Birgu, Valletta and others I am unaware of) have the 'luxury' of having their own 'public space' whilst parking vigorously in the time allotted ones too. Are these fined just the way we are?
A parking problem at its best and a system at its worst!

A. Mifsud

Mugliett is totally right. Paying €3.2m up front for 100 parking spaces, on public leased land is simply outrageous and equally insane.
The government will simply be subsidizing the operators' extension costs. This is funding contractors with public money. Acquisition of parking spaces should be negotiated against a preferential rate on the basis of the actual daily parking rate, and for a period not exceeding a 5 year term.
It's in the national interest that the government reviews his position.

the problem still stays with the tax payer - because this resignation does not automatically suspend the decision. hence in a time when tax cuts cannot be afforded, the government is buying itself car spaces at 3.2mill, the gave themselves 500 euro per week increase, out of the blues they dished out MRIs to three private clinics something which would usually cost 700 euros a scan, they are negotiating the lease of St james at 1mill per annum with an upfront payment of circa 5mill, the now suspended car park leases, and so on.....and so the tax payer pays.
this seems nothing more than the quick distribution of what's left before judgement day. i would like to recommend the national audit office to block the purchase of any shredders or the commissioning of shredders.

are members of the opposition on the commitee? if yes were they in favour of the extension? Did they request information as Mr. Mugliette did?

Why should the taxpayers fork out the money to help out a private company, that botched up the project in the first place?

Can anyone tell us who are the owners of the MCP car park? This could give us a better idea why the costs have been grossly inflated, at the detriment of us taxpayers.

It is true that the GonziPN lost all social feelings. Paying € 3.2 million for 100 slots in a car park! With € 3.2 million one could build a whole car park block.
No wonder many PN supporters lost faith in their leader and the party.

Yet another cash bonus to the friends of friends, €3.2m for the acquisition of some 100 parking slots,....when would all this abuse of taxpayers' money end?

he disagreed that the government would pay €3.2m ......
I agree with Mugliette; the problem is that no future government(neither JM nor LG) will be able to curb the power these few persons have to get this kind of money (gathered from our pockets)!
