Updated: Scabies case at home for the elderly

A case of scabies has been found at the Zejtun Home for the Elderly, the Health Department said.
The person concerned has been put in isolation for 24 hours and all those who were in contact with this person are being given preventive treatment.
A spokesman for the department said all necessary measures are being taken by the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate to prevent the disease from spreading and there was no cause for alarm.
Scabies is an easily spread skin disease caused by mites. It causes extreme itching.

Malta is way back to the 50s and 60s. This is the progress under Gonzi PN. GonziPN won`t work.

From what I know, scabies is highly contagious, very unpleasant, has nothing to do with an infected person being clean or dirty. This is because body contact with an infected person, however casual, allows the mite to infect the 'clean' victim (an infected clean person can, conversely, infect a filthy person who is not suffering to this skin condition. The same applies to lice which is no respecter of class or rank). One case in an institution is certainly not a cause for alarm for the general population also because the condition is not fatal but merely unpleasant. If one person within a family gets scabies, the rest of the family have to be treated too at the same time. Body contact does not have to be intimate for the mite to pass on and the people most prone to this infection are people who are sexually active and promiscuous. The wages of sin and all that! But it could be worse.
The elderly are vulnerable to this infection and the worst off are young babies who often do the rounds being fondled by all and sundry.
Treatment of scabies is not a big issue as long as it is rigorous.

The prevalence of scabies is currently rising in the UK. It is estimated that there are 300 million cases of scabies worldwide each year. In the UK, about 100 people per 100,000 of the population consult their GP with scabies each month.
The above information and more, including references to sources was taken from an NHS site:

Perhaps we should look outside our shores before we blame this or that entity for everything. Having said that, every effort to educate and improve health is to be encouraged!

But in Malta everything that goes wrong is the government's fault including disease.

Government should monitor these Government homes operated by the private, especially the quality of food. recently I visited a relative, the food left on her cupboard, cold and looks horrible.

@ all the spreaders of doom and gloom.
One single case of scabies in such an institution, spotted, isolated and treated before it could spread to the rest is a certificate of competence for the authorities concerned.
Scabies has never disappeared completely anywhere in the world and the occurrence of an isolated case is of no significance and it is not a cause of alarm except for incorrigible doomsayers.

@ A. Felix Busuttil, notwithstanding Dr Saliba's comment above. I agree with you. Your comment makes perfect sense. Dr Saliba's defence does not. Your comment is based on what you saw. You're not assuming that a single case of scabies should cause alarm.

As usual I'm certain that it is Gonzipn's fault. It may also be that the Government is doing this on purpose to win the next election by making people sick and consequently would not be able to go to vote.
If I don't win the Super 5 lottery next week I will also blame it on Gonzipn.

Of course we will be saying that there is no cause for alarm as usual

@ Lucienne Dimech.
Yes! there is no cause of alarm for a single isolated cases of scabies and especially in a home for the elderly or the infirm. It happens all the time all over the world. What is important is to detect the case early, to isolate it and to treat it before it spreads like wildfire thoughout the institution. And this appears to have been done already. What more do you want?

One does have to be concerned but not alarmed, this is an old people's home where many people share confined common areas. This infestation may reflect the lack of hygiene in this home, it spreads very fast

@ Francis Saliba: From your comments, it seems you're almost ready to certify that the institution is doing all it can. I think we should let those of us concerned to communicate their concern... No need to censor them.

... or it may have been introduced by a visitor to the home. Since origin cannot be ascertained, please don't start blaming the home and throwing these types of malicious accusations Mr. P. Bonnici. That's very unfair on the employees and caregivers working there.

@ C Bonnici.
You are not expressing reasonable concern. You are creating unreasonable anxiety and defaming the institution without just cause.
Please, do not start to imagine what "seems" to you what I am "almost ready to do". You do not even comprehend what I write clearly in straightforward English.
