Air Malta to launch bingo on Facebook
Air Malta will be launching an online bingo game on its Facebook page, through which fans can win flights, Air Malta limited edition T-shirts and other merchandise.
It was reacting to a recent article on Maltastar which suggested that the airline was to start offering bingo onboard its flights.
Asked whether this was the case, the airline said that following Maltastar’s article, with which it was "very amused", and knowing that bingo was very popular, it had decided to launch the game on Facebook.

Just imagine a businessman traveling in business class or a person going abroad for a family funeral, or passengers traveling on stretchers , or people going abroad for health reasons , just hear the cabin crew calling up numbers and people filling up boxes ! This is a clear indication that Air Malta is turning its strategy from a schedule airline to low cost airline where only one class of passengers will be served. What type of marketing is this? Usually business class passengers render 25 percent of airline profits. Instead of adding more classes to accommodate different types of market segmentation Air Malta is going to one class of passengers without differentiate their product. These are the professionals that are taking the bulk of Air Malta`s cash flow!!!!

I suspect that the winners of these 'free' tickets will have to,pay taxes and administration fees and they will only be able to book flights which are half empty anyway.. Try getting an upgrade with Flyaway Bonus Points to see what I mean.

Air Malta don't forget the Maltese Tombola jargon ' Is-Sorijiet -22, Ix-Xiha - 90, and the most important one Il-Maqlubin - 69.

I agree with you 100% it is the worst air line web site in the world. The new look of the aircraft is really nice
and attractive but please invest few more thousands of euros in a modern web site for who like to make use of our airline please it is not so difficult as there are many companies in Malta who specializes in computer programs.

@Godwin difesa:
in my days at college, we were advised never to say: 'the worst, for sure, definitely' etc because that implies you know the whole market. And, let's face it - it obviously is not the case.
have a look at: http://www.turkmenistanairlines.com/
of course, should we all not strive to be better, but the worst website? possibly not my friend

This is low-cost airlines' form of publicity. Why not? But let Air Malta copy their tariffs as well.

Mr. C Bonnici and likewise, if you are not aware today facebook and other social media platforms are becoming more and more popular with loads of job vacancies asking for experience in those sectors. Everyone knows how social media is shaping the advertising and branding of brands. Check the requirements of this vacancy i stumbled upon just now: http://www.maltajobs.com.mt/jobs/social-media-and-brand-administrator/
Requests: A minimum of 2 years of work related experience in Social Media that include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
Not being there means you have 25 - 50% of your business out of the game..

@ Amanda Scott, it is true that Social Networking is proliferating. I think that Air Malta's involvement in that, is simply great. The problem is not that Airmalta has been establishing an online SNS presence, and indeed, a very successful one so far. The problem would be if Air Malta would delve deeper into mixing on-line gaming (for some reason or another) with anything Air Malta is about. This is not a professional opinion. It is my personal perspective, as I'm generally against gambling, and as I'm going as far as interpreting Air Malta's move as a first move towards a direction which I's feel, should and could be avoided. From a professional perspective, I'd urge to do a PR exercise to find out whether many others would feel like I do about the matter.
Instead of Bingo, Air Malta could easily come up with more constructive ways of giving away flights. E.g. encouraging young people to engage in educational, voluntary, and/or creative works, and so on... In general, then, what I'm selling here is a stir away from gambling, towards more righteous values... And for some reason, I'm sure Air Malta would understand.

Mr Bonnici. see your point and I agree with you. Maybe instead of Bingo they could have opted for a more basic game. I know there is a local website which organize online tournaments with various games for businesses, if im not wrong it's www.play.com.mt , so yes there are other options as you stated.
As for Air Malta going into gambling, that's an area which air malta doesn't want to go. It's not their niche and they would do better in investing the money into promotions for flights.
C. Bonnici
Oct 5th 2012, 19:28
@ Amanda: I agree. Perhaps a different game would be more appropriate than bingo. At least, one requiring the person to do something... Bingo is also an insult to one's intelligence...

This is a discrimination to all those that do not use internet at home, these people have already lost the chance to participate.

Oct 5th 2012, 16:47
Mr. Camilleri, the so called as you name it discrimination happens all the time. I for instance do not buy the daily newspapers therefore with your theory I am also a victim of discrimination as many offers and competitions are posted on the traditional newspapers. I wish to point out that according to the latest census the vast majority of the Maltese people have computer with Internet access at home. However, we must also take into consideration the minority groups I.e those who do not possess a pc and Internet at home. Not because they lack such competitions but in today's e-technological era one needs to be equipped with such technologies. Especially for the young and mid aged population, who are witnessing the importance of such technology.
M Cassar

as if people don't have internet
paul camilleri
Oct 5th 2012, 17:59
@ Ms ate Micallef
by writing here you cannot claim discrimination as you are reading the news paper on line. however this is also because you choose not to buy every news paper on the market to compete in a competition.
while as some clever brains stated in a reply that everyone has access to the internet, this is not true for starters old age pensioners do not have access. people in Hospital can gain access at a very expensive cost, some people at home while they can afford a internet connection may be hard up to buy a computer and then there are people who do not like face book as well as people that simply do not wish to have internet at home because they are sitting 8 hours a day 5 days a week in front of one.
therefore i would suggest that air malta have these bingo cards delivered in groups to postal addresses and in a similar fashion send out a set of 5 numbers every month
C. Bonnici
Oct 5th 2012, 19:20
@ Paul Camilleri, I see some point in your argument, especially since Air Malta is a public company. But well, unfortunately we're living in a real and practical world. One can't achieve a perfect balance between all stakeholders. I think it is the Government's responsibility to encourage everyone to obtain access to the internet, not Air Malta's. Those with no Facebook accounts, and those with no internet access, are missing not just on Air Malta's offers, but on so many other things...
Also, consider, that if Air Malta sends bingo cards to all, at home, then those of us who have access to the internet would get a bigger chance to win, and this would of course constitute bias.... Moreover, if it would then be argued that Air Malta should, therefore, conduct all offers off-line, then it would be the case that Air Malta would be missing on its competitors, and that it would be sacrificing a lot, for the few... So, whichever you see this, there will always be some bias.
Conrad Costa

discrimination implies you are actively excluded from the promotion. example: i choose not to use facebook for whatever reason. i therefore do not participate in the bingo competition in question. i am free however, to create a FB account if i chose to. if air malta decided to exclude people from participating in the competition because of gender, orientation, political view, age or whatever then THAT is discrimination.

@C. Sammut, Facebook has become the best tool for marketing and brand recognition
1. Branding and Free Advertising
With its over 1 billion members worldwide, Facebook is a great way to generate brand awareness.
Free advertising occurs when your fans will “like” your page and recommend them to their friends.
2. Customer Interaction
Facebook is a good medium to interact with your customers. You can communicate promotions, events and contests. You can ask for ideas from them on how you can improve your products or services.
3. Networking
Facebook was indeed created to build networks of people. You can search for people or businesses in the Facebook platform that are involved in your industry and become a fan of a page or profile. By being connected to them you increase your visibility to your target customers.
4. Drive web traffic and Lead generation
Facebook will serve as a gateway that will lead to your website. With the recent updates in the Facebook system, websites can now be linked to Facebook profiles and pages.
Facebook can be used as a potential lead generation tool. You can review your fans profile and find future prospects to aid in lead qualifying process.
5. Reputation Management
Fans can post anything they want and thereby the possibility of a destructive comment is high. Or sometimes some people may be against the organization and will cite a campaign attacking and destroying your brand’s reputation. Facebook, as an interactive media can be used for reputation management by answering back to that bad publicity and clarifying some misguided information. This task is done by a Facebook marketing virtual assistant that can protect your company’s reputation.

At this time of year it's most unlikely that many flights would be full so, quite wisely,Air Malta are generating publicity at no extra cost to themselves. I say well dokne Air Malta.

How does giving away free flights generate revenue for Airmalta? Surely liking a page does not really help with marketing...
Ramon Mangion
Oct 5th 2012, 15:53
In most cases people take friends and/or family with them so from one free flight they will get others :)
Mr Zeppi Borg
Oct 5th 2012, 15:55
C.Sammut every company in the world sometimes gives away something for free. It would cost nothing to airmalta but the person participating can pay for the ticket if he/she loose the game.... so please leave it to the experts.. I am not an airmalta fanatic but this is just something that the general public would like....
